Lots of "freezing" moments (not just the UI)

Lots of "freezing" moments (not just the UI)

Hello there!

I saw there's one common problem that other GC3 players/testers are experiencing: Yeah, I'm talking about the UI freezing.

The UI works for me, but the issue, in my case, is that while I play, my game freezes a lot, and I mean in a sense that it's loading a lot of times (for example, if i just zoom out, it takes 4 seconds to move again, or if I enter the ship designer, I have to wait like 8 seconds in order to interact normally).

I'm no technical expert in PC hardware but my PC middle-tier (every modern game works perfectly if I set medium graphics on average). Because I don't know if the problem is that i'm not meeting the hardware requirements for this game, i'm posting here my dxdiag so you can help me n' stuff ^_^ :

Pretty game btw.

For people having RAM issues, there's a program that helps cut down on RAM use called "ramrush." I used it to help with Marvel Heroes and its memory leak, but it's been pretty helpful with GCIII as well.

Bamdorf: Have you any other games running at the same time? Have you tried items 2 and 3 in my reply # 13 on this thread?

I find it hard to believe that you are using up all of the 8GB RAM you have if the only game you have running is GC3 unless there is something else wrong. If you still have this problem after trying items 2 and 3 (my reply #13) then I think you should follow the steps in the "GalCiv II Support FAQ" and open a ticket for Stardock to pursue.

I have had tickets opened for beta 2 and for beta 3.

Unfortunately I have never encountered a freeze that was reproducible  (Reload and keep playing, no freeze) except for once early in Beta 2 and that has not recurred.

And they happen at any time...clicking turn, opening research, clicking on a ship or colony, whatever.

So there doesn't seem to be a clear path to improving things.  (Yes I have done all the suggested fixes multiple times.)

I did notice that if I ran Malawarebytes and Avira concurrently I seemed to get a few more freezes (not sure the testing time was long enough to really say), still not a lot.   But now I routinely shut down those and a number of other background programs before launching GC3.

I agree that it doesn't seem like it should be a memory problem.   I even expanded my virtual mem size to 64 gb, didin't seem to help.  I have also run diagnostic programs for the hardware with no result (memory, hard disk, video, etc.

Perhaps one other thing to check is the Steam Overlay.   I have had that on normally maybe that contributes.

I think I proved it is not a  memory issue.   I turned on windowed mode and also started the performance meter and selected available memory to display.  At each stage I waited until the numbers stabilized --- it can take a while for the monitor to catch up.

Max Available Bytes (gb)   Before GC3 starts = 6.4  (Windows in using the rest)  start GC3 to main menu = 4.1    Load Huge Game turn 118 = 1.3   After playing about 20 turns:  2.4  (!)   Why memory was released while playing i don't know.   This 2.4 gb figure proved fairly stable though.   Maybe I had not waited long enough after loading the game file.

Some many turns later the game froze, as I accessed the victory screen to check progress. (That's a new one! lol)    Avail Bytes = 2.4    Freezing caused no change in the available memory.    Processor usage around this time was about 50%.

Just to check I collected the debug data and then used the task manager to kill GC3.   Available bytes = 6.4

If there is any interest in the debug files, I can add them to a ticket, but I couldn't duplicate the freeze, so I am not sure there is any point.

there is always a reason for sending in a ticket for freezes. Yes, they can be horrid to debug, but Stardock can do wonders with no more than the debug.err file. And since you are getting the freezes so often, they can suggest things to try. Just today I received a recommendation to run an SFC scan, and it solved a crash problem I was having that looked like a "freeze".

SFC stands "for System File Checker" (I found it in Wikipedia) and it looks like a useful tool. I found the log file it created rather voluminous and difficult in tracking down any specific problem that might have caused my problem.

Have you turned off virus check programs? I found out that was causing my problems. So, until the 2nd or 3rd patch comes out for this version, I have to disable the programs before I start.

I havent had any occurances of this yet. I am running 16gb of ram in my rig. I mean why wouldnt you now days? Even 16gb of Coursair Dominator ram wasn't very expensive.

I use IObit game booster and set it to turn off Avira, Malawarebytes, and a bunch of other stuff. (And I checked that it is doing it).  It releases about 250mb of memory, which is not a lot but every bit helps.    But note there is not a huge difference if I don't do this.

I noticed recently there was a small update to directx and also to my video card (HD 5700, Dec 9), but updating hasn't chenged my results.   I still get a freeze once in a while.   Today I got a freeze the first turn after I started the program and loaded an old game file.    I killed the program, reloaded the same file, and played about 3 hr without incident on a large map.  Very frustrating that I can't reproduce the freezes, even when a freeze occurs immediately after loading a save file!

I monitor memory and processor use continuously and memory use will got to 80% sometimes briefly but not higher.

I keep thinking there is some system process that is messing me up, but I can't find anything in the event table that makes any sense to me.  But I don't understand most of the stuff there.

I am running the Steam overlay so I can conveniently get screenshots.   I have tried stopping that but it doesn't seem to have an effect.

I do appreciate any ideas people have.   Sure would like to figure this out.

I have had some stuttering as well, which I assumed was the game loading up textures and such. It generally gets better after loading a game and playing a few turns, but it can rear its head again launching the ship designer or new screens. It was suggested to me to disable gel UI which did help a lot. However I still get them and it annoys me, which is why I haven''t played extensively either :(

Well, I can't say I haven't played extensively as Steam is reporting 99 hrs played.  LoL.   So it isn't stopping me.

Bamdorf: You might try an SFC scan. It will detect corrupted system files and correct them.

I doubt its a corrupted system. I had the problem where it would freeze on the first attempt to load, but would run fine on the second attempt. I really believe after SD does a couple of it tweaking patches, the freeze problem will go away until the next major overhaul. That has been the how it has gone for me so far. Although I must admit, this is the first time I deactivated all of my spyware/malware programs and it seems to be doing ok now. They must have some initial controls for the large releases that get scaled back after things seem to be going ok.

I ran SFC and it reported that there were corrupt files but that it could not repair some of them.   Although the log  file says that

"all files and registry keys found in this transaction were repaired"   Huh.   Well, I will just try to get another freeze I guess.

Well, There is always the remove the game and reinstall pain option, but that should be your last resort.

What my reading of the Microsoft forums suggest is that I need to do a Windows install - repair.   Since I have a Dell, this means I will wipe everything and have to reinstall everything.

UGH.

I have tried reinstalling  the game a few times, with indifferent success.

I just went through that, which may explain the lack of freezing in the past few days.

It wasn't a voluntary reinstall/repair/etc., though.

After some thought and the realization that I have not reinstalled windows since I got my XPS 8100 (4 yrs), I have decided to reinstall the OS and go from there.  I found a guide on the web for doing a clean install for a Dell, so here goes nothing.   He's pretty thorough so I bet I won't be up and running for  a while!   LOL, it's the journey that is the fun, right?

Good luck. :)

Wow I must be one of the only people that haven't had any issues w/ freezing, I get the random ctd but normally that is once every 4-7 hours of play.  Game seems very stable to me. :S

@damonlundy: I think your problem will be the Intel HD graphics 4000 card. Maybe its dedicated memory of 256mb is not enough, as requirements stated on the steamshop is a minimum of 512mb.

Its just a guess, but maybe you could borrow a nvidia or AMD graphics card from a friend to test if the crashes remain?

Ugh! Now that really sucks. You have my sympathy.

I have a 1gb Radeon HD 5700 series video card.  Should be ok, I think.

I completed reiinstalling Windows today and was pleased that the file system check now worked.

I have loaded up GalCiv3 and played 2.5 hr on a large map without incident.  Well, we shall see!
