Star names...suck to be honest. :3

Star names...suck to be honest. :3

3776 stars, and the journey of one man to right a wrong.

I started a game and was having fun as the iridium (love them :inlove: ) BUT after a few turns and was colonizing I scrolled over some odd names. In fact all the stars in my area had fubar names like; xhxl558; Ragnarokchu; LordAreon; Xelni Jota. Seriously?

The realization that they sucked and people were not over reacting from previous complaints nearly made me laugh...because I'm like that. (lol) More seriously though, its going to be a first impression for many people, and its the type of random annoying thing that breaks immersion and makes you say, "WTF?!?" There are others that shouldn't be in either, like Hoth also known as random star name 57, and alderan, Rumpestildskin, Sauron, Sobek-Re. Sobek-Re sounds familiar more than others though. And they aren't even founders names, they are SD made! (still better than gizmotechnica)

Realistically, founders star names begin at 532 and there are 3776 names so SD would need to replace 7/8ths of the names and i don't think its possible nor do they want to do something that boring. Luckily I am editing out all the shit for those that are lazy, yet demanding that star names be serious. Consider it my Christmas present. ;)

More specifically regular names like Harper (love that name) and Katie I'm leaving, no one should have a problem with a name that might already be a star in real life. It also makes absolutely no sense to bug me about when I'll be done because I'll share it at release only, when mods are working and it will just make more sense. (and I'm busy as bees.)

So:

1. Edit star names.

2. Give out star names.

3. Rejoice.

Star names are an issue to me too.  Even in GalCiv2 there were strange things going on...  So I did some digging about star names, and decided for my modding purposes I will insert as many real universe names (Bayer nomenclature method) as possible and also create variants that fit the suspension of disbelief.  To summarize, I take names of constellations and prefix them with a greek letter, so Thuban is also officially known as Alpha Draconis -- the brightest star in the constellation Draconis -- so there is a Beta Draconis, Gamma Draconis, etc. that can be added.  Antares is also known as Alpha Scorpii, and Vega is Alpha Lyrae, and so on.  In some cases I keep the name like Vega, but extrapolate other names so Delta Lyrae (real or not) is added to the star name list.

I figure if a good 25% of the star names show up in game using the Bayer nomenclature system, that would really help with immersion when playing.  Wikipedia has a very thorough listing of star names and their various real world names - I highly recommend looking there, although it is very Terran-centric for a game that features alien civilizations.

I know because I ran into the exact same problem and someone else helped me out.

Pay it forward LOL.

Real stars often have names that are seemingly meaningless letters and numbers.  It's not a big deal.

We are going to to make a editing pass on all the star name, but we will be a bit more forgiving than some might like, We really appreciate the support from our early founders, and want to be able to use their star names if at all possible.

This means we may be making some changes, Translating L33t to plain English, Adding spaces, and truncating some. Hopefully we will be able to keep as many names as possible without to much strain on the players.

That said their are currently 3339 founder names, so its going to take a bit of time for us to curate them all.

Why not have an option to either enable founder names or disable them? Problem solved.

Sorry for resurrecting an ancient thread, but I was curious if there were any plans to be able to rename a star you come across in game?  Or disable founder's names (sorry founders, but yeah, currently playing a game with two adjacent stars named "Boatmurdered" and "Herbig Haro", for example).  It really takes you out of the immersion.

Hell, if there was an option to just name all those stars with random numbers and letters, that would be better.  System AAX-133 would be better than "Herbig Haro".

Anyway, great game otherwise, and Beta 5 is a lot of fun!

my founders star name is the "Howling Dog" star in honor of my Beagle.

Obviously no one is considering the crushed dreams of the star namers who believed their choice was inspirational, and/or those who became founders solely for the ability to name a star. :)

Actually, when we consider the number of stars out there, it invokes the monkeys and typewriters thing. All names are possible.

If anyone is struggling to create star names, whether to rename systems, or mod them into the game: I found the Bayer Nomenclature System that astronomers use to be very inspirational - from a Terran's conqueror's point of view  .  E.g.  Vega is also known as Alpha Lyrae, "alpha" for being the brightest/most significant star in the constellation Lyrae.  Since there are several stars in each constellation that we can see from Earth, it follows you can use names like Beta Lyrae, Gamma Lyrae, Delta Lyrae and so on - unless you know a common name for the star in question.  Another example: Betelgeuse, aka Alpha Orionis of the constellation Orion; so an star called Iota Orionis would be perfectly in keeping with the naming method.  Wikipedia is *very* helpful with this approach.

A more fictional resource I highly recommend: the RPG, Traveller!  Oodles of system names populate the game setting, many interesting, some funny, some weird, and most quite immersive.  If you get hold of a map of the subsectors of the the Spinward Marches, you'll find plenty of viable system names!

There are many other sources like sci-fi novels, Dr. Who, Farscape, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc., but I found the above two methods very helpful on their own without borrowing from movies , TV, and their related properties.

My suggestion to StarDock is that star names get assigned to categories.  Create a sub-folder under data/English/Text called StarNames and any XML files inside there can be used for star names.  Founder names could be in one XML file, old GC2 star names in a second XML file.  Then you can easily create an options screen to turn on/off individual XML files.

This would also provide a place for modders to create StarName XML files that players could easily add to their game.

I was pretty disappointed when I spent a very long time picking a great greek star name only to find some of the ridiculousness that got approved.

This sounds like a very reasonable idea. I hope they take it to heart.

So was I.  Now it seems that because of them all of our names may be made optional to the player.

thx for the starnames maiden666! i also hate some of the original star names but the other day i found a class26 planet named jotunheimen III and i was inlove with that planet hahaha

Went to the wikipedia sources named on the first page and added many of the starnames mentioned there to the list, it's up to 407 entries now (including the above posted list).

I've tried to look out for common or historical names mostly with only some of the generic names from the "big lists" in order to spice it up a bit (there's alot of similar sounding Al-blabla names because of the arabic historical roots of astronomy) or if the generic name was an interesting entry (such as Wolf 359 which turns out to be a very close neighbor to our own sun... before this night I believed this to be a Star Trek invention^^)

I am such a nerd. Is it bad that I did know that Wolf 359 is a real place?

Not at all  . The first list I took manually out from a software called "Stellarium", which makes you see the sky on your computer screen. Wolf 359 is very hard to see there because it is brown dwarf star. Good to have wikipedia around for this :)

You know, I think it was like a decade ago or something, but I think I uncovered that fact similarly to how you did, now that I think about it. Knew it from Trek and then was like whaaaaaat when I found out it's a real star. Memory is hazy though.
