The other civilizations game

The other civilizations game

How not to make a game

So this is regarding that other Civ game that a lot might have already played during the weekend and if for nothing else is useful for noting some things that should not be done in a game of very similar nature such as GC3:

  • No meaningful differences between "factions" not even graphically in 2014! Starcaft seems like it was a lifetime ago :)...
  • Lackluster gameplay beginning from the middle of the game. Maps and gameplay have not been tuned together
  • AI is weak and I mean WEAK. Maybe not Civ5 caliber but it is hard to tell the difference when a full blown "strong" civilization cannot protect its own borders half a map away from the player when attacked by a relatively weak force. Coming from a strategy game with combat at its core this is not good
  • Severe case of pressing "Next Turn" a hundred times in mid and late game till "well deserved" victory is that of the players. This is mostly due to passive AI though
  • Diplomacy in game but not good for much
  • UI no-gos like hiding events under a decision prompt, or closing down control menu per default but the most hideous: referencing other civs by their leader names. Dear AI let us go to war together against... hmm... what was the name of that guy? Frag end Reg or Sengtik Helles Ganti? Why are we declaring war on people and not Civs anyhow?
  • Ending puts on the ring on boring. Top it off with no score system like found in any strat game in the last ten years and even prior in case of games

As it has been mentioned in the live stream that at least some of the DEVs of GC3 are going to try out that other game I hope all of the above will only make this game better

"second would be for different aliens (and graphics)"

That would be a neat expansion I agree. The new types of aliens could be more tough and come into play in later stages of the game, where if you have "emancipated" a lot of their nests they would start an offensive against your CIV attacking everywhere where territory has not been takes by any of the  CIVs. I am thinking on Blue Gender style extermination attempt against human beings with living alien tanks bursting through defenses and swarms of tough bugs darkening the sky and the only way to stop them is to field a strong counter offensive against their huge nests towering like hills near your borders.

It would enable Firaxis to roll out an expansion with relative low amount of effort since implementation of new alien units is probable easier then for the player and the usage of the already in-game scripting function could take care of the invasion. This would also deliver at least partially on the interactive aliens promise (at least they would react in a meaningful way if the player would go out its way on killing them)

This is also something GC3 could also contemplate: have a kind of apocalyptic event where one of the races goes berserk (kinda where humans are heading in the plot) so if certain circumstances apply all races have to fight for survival together making them almost instantly allies as a nice twist :)

@krazikarl' And anyone else. Do you get the feeling galciv3 will have a buggy release? I don't, they seem to be doing a damn good job at listening and fixing issues. That will make reviews better more new players and more money to make more content and betting reviews to bring more new players...

Here is a nice little review for the game: http://angryjoeshow.com/2014/11/civilization-beyond-earth-angry-review/

I find the reviewers analysis generally more granular (and mentioning the bad parts as well as the good ones) unlike that of the largest review portals, and though it does not say much more new aspects that have not been mentioned before on this site it is worth checking out :)

While I loved GC2 and I know this is still the beta but its still GC2 that runs on a 64 bit machine. The new civ 5 game is a fun game , they couldn't make a AC reboot because Atari owns all rights to everything in the original game so they had to make it  a branch off Civ5. Maybe GC3 will be great when its finished who knows but with the first 2 parts in game I'm not seeing anything that I want to get excited about from GC2

Basically, Beyond Earth at this point is an epic fail.

There's really no other way to put it. It looks like the developers had no idea what made SMAC such a great game.

I like LH:FE, but its still pretty buggy to me.  It crashes like you wouldn't believe on my computer, and I have a pretty generic setup (I play a good amount of games, and nothing else crashes much).  So I kind of suspect that there will be a good amount of bugs.  I'd think that it will be much better than the launch of Elemental though since I do think that Stardock has learned some lessons.

What happened firaxis had the best an out there with civ4. One of the strengths of the air was not scaling down between versions example hand I Tokugawa. Scaling down is something star dock likes to do what happened to the torians from dread lords to dark avatar. What happened to the krynn or the iconian espionage. What happened to the korath tactics and fleets. What happened to the drengin fleet. They did have five broken ais in twilight of the armor. I can't comment on civil five or beyond earth ais. because civilization 3 had no way of stopping me from being a really advanced civilization. I actually found the limitation of city building forcing me to have the right technological equivalence of the time with ais keeping up to be refreshing. Thalans in twilight have proven the an can keep up this is not a problem. This needs to leek to the other ais. I still think civics from civilization four was more flexible. Don't know why they went backwards. The way galactic is playing ideologie would have to say they had before civilization. are affinities like being leader based in civilization four. Being leader based was one of it's stronger points. I wish with it's customisation being split up between factions leaders and the player's choosing was leader based. Not much of a classical fan iI like heavy metal. I think bad ai  breaks a game shame on you firaxis.what does aow3 stand for. Hey DARCA I like your new avatar I was just wondering could you send me some real cool avatar pictures so I could have a new avatar like you and ronin you know where to find me.

 go bananas. :3

Rant:

It was several years ago I was looking for cool robot and drone pics. I found a lone isolated image that I fell in love with, but knew nothing of it or the origins. It was my original blue avatar. And it as a visual aid, helped inspire many designs of sifi armor for me. Recently I did a image search of it as I saw a variation of it being used on steam for MAGIX premium 2015.

So I found it and many other versions in the links given and am pleased to use them as avatars for other sites such as steam and...other places I roam. ;)

The artist is VERY talented beyond drawing robots so look at everything. :)

The end.
