Three ways to find your missing laptop or PC

If (as happened to Uvah) your laptop or your PC has been stolen or even misplaced (in someone else’s apartment), while it’s not as easy as on an Apple OS device, it’s still possible.

All these methods depend on the thief’s greed. If he/she decides to check (or deface) your facebook, gmail or Dropbox accounts, there’s a good chance you can trace your property’s IP address.

That doesn’t mean you can find its physical address easily, but the Police can. You or they can obtain a warrant for that, and the ISP must surrender the address.

So, first thing: Go to the Police.

1. Dropbox: Very cool, because data is synced silently on boot. Just logon to your account and you’ll see the list of devices which logged on under the Security tab…just check the date and time of access. Anytime after the theft…and you’ve nailed it. The Police should be able to do that as well.

2. Gmail: Same as Dropbox if the thief wants to read your email. Just go to Inbox and scroll down to Details under “Last account activity” (bottom right corner). If someone has logged on, Change your password after writing down the IP address.

3. Facebook: Go to Settings and then to “Where you’re logged in”. Hover over the city, and you’ll get the IP address.

Most important: Don’t be a hero. Don’t try to confront the thief. You have no idea what this person is capable of: Go to the Police!

Good advice but i think its better to install a tracking program be it on your phone on your notebook or pad.
As long as the guy doesnt wipe the drive your chances are good.

One doesn't preclude the other, benmanns...and for those who don't have the money for what they believe might be a remote possibility, I provided these three methods.
