The budget is approved, team assembled

It's not a secret that the new Star Control reboot is in development.  The approved budget is approximately $5 million (Star Control 2's budget was $50,000 - that's how amazing Paul and Fred were!).

We are missing a vital component however. The Lead Designer.  While we have received a lot of resumes for this position, we are still looking for the ideal candidate.  Right now, the development on the game is engine-related but we will reach the point fairly soon where we will need an on sight lead designer.

The position is in Towson Maryland (Stardock East).  The team is made up of some of the most experienced developers and artists in the industry.

Thank you for the status update! Glad to see the IP getting the respect it deserves.

Of course, gangbuster sales would be nice, maybe a nice two-or-three film movie deal with tie-in television series, an interactive toy line with little ships based on classic & upcoming Star Control races, the sort of toys you can place on some sort of docking mechanism (call it the star base!);  where the toys on the dock are represented in-game for all sorts of hyper-melee adventures...

Hmm...who do we know who builds toys/games like that; with a parent company actively musing the idea of starting a film/television studio...

Its right there on the tip of my tongue...

:-D

Maybe one day I could work for SD one day. I can see Towson from my window and regularly go there. Sure would be cool. :)

5M... Surely you can squeeze me a new comp in there, right? ;)

Great news, BTW.

Do you have room for an unskilled, inexperienced, intern who can work from home? I'll work for minimum wage and turn out high quality spaghetti code.

More than 20 years after Star Control 2 for thw first time at 12 years of age, it is still one of my all time favorite games. I still load it up every now and then and enjoy it just as much as I did the first time.

Hearing about Stardock's reboot of SC2 is the best news I've heard in a long time (after the unspeakable disappointment of Star Control 3). I'm really excited about this project and I sincerely hope you find the right person to take on the Design Lead.

From my game experience, I hope the Design Lead will stay true to the following points, qualities that still make the original SC2 so fun and enjoyable:

- Interesting and Witty alien races and dialogue - The dialogue often had me chuckling, and was interesting enough that I would reload the game just to read the other conversation lines. It felt responsive as well - as if you really were discussing the finer points of Frungy with another being.

- Customising Flagship / static fleet ships - I really enjoyed beimg able to costomise the flagship to suit certain roles (mineral freighter early on, and then refitring to ultimate battleship), but the static fleet ships added a challenge in melee. Every random opponent made a different battle experience. All equally entertaining.

- Exploration of system, and of story - Exploring the galaxy was fun in itself, but discovering ruins of the Androsynth, making contact with alien races like the Slylandro, hints about the Taalo, the Precursors, or the real agenda of the Orz; these were all tantilising questions that kept me playing until daylight.

Again, very excited and I wish you all the best with this project. :)
