Is game update needed before modding?

Hi!

I'm new to GC...just bought a boxed copy of GC II Ultimate Edition (ver 2.02) and installed it without any problem using the Key provided with the game manual.  However, I'm having a difficult time finding a way to download the 2.04 update...am waiting for another reply from GameStop customer support. (I bought the game through Amazon.com).

Question:  I've read that the 2.04 update is important to have.  However, I'm eager to get playing...but don't want to invest a lot of time playing a "faulty" game.  

I've been looking at major mods members of the community have been very generous (with their time) to make...and I'm wondering if the 2.04 update is needed to be installed in order for the major mods to work properly; and, if it is not needed, is there any significant reason for me to keep trying to get the 2.04 update?

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

It is not needed to use mods, and you don't need to deal with GameStop to get the update. You can register retail copies here and download the latest version here after doing so.

However, I've run into an unanticipated "wall."  The copy of the game which I bought from Amazon.com was "used."  So, although I could load it and I can play it, the previous owner apparantly registered it, preventing me from registering it...and being able to download the 2.04 update.  

As I previously bought GC II Gold, but never played it...because I saw the opportunity to buy the used copy of GC II Ultimate Edition, I really don't want to spend even more money...just to get another new Key from Stardock...in order to get the 2.04 update.

So...I'd just like to verify my understanding from your helpful reply that I won't be "missing" anything if I install a major mod to my 2.02 version...and that I can download and install, say, Altarn's Polished Twilight of the Arnor Ver 2 mod and that it will run perfectly fine without my first obtaining and installing the 2.04 update...am I understanding this correctly?  

Please forgive my trepidation but I'm quite new to "game modding."  8C

You should be fine with 2.02 as far as I know.
