Yeah, not to turn this into an A vs B thread, but I just can't get myself to play more than an hour of EL at a time.  I find it just crushingly boring, and it barely even qualifies as fantasy to me.  No magic, and a handful of units per faction?  To me, that misses the whole opportunity that fantasy offers - the world should be a whole menagerie of units, magic and otherworldly things.

To each their own, I guess. People used to say the same thing to me about Master of Orion 2 and GalCiv 2.

Endless Legend is the best fantasy 4X game for me in a long, long time. It's already on par with LH for me and it still has two expansions on the way.

I haven't played WoM, but after watching the first few episodes of Das' let's play... the thing that jumps out at me is the map... as in what a mess.  I don't know how anyone can tell what on earth is going on... it's great to have interesting looking maps full of foliage and stuff, but it looks so hard to tell which tiles are plains vs forest vs hills vs swamp etc.

That one of the things I always liked about FE/LH, I know some might call it a bit "bland", but at least you can tell a forest tile from a plains tile.

abob,

I agree with that about the map. It's also one of my few peeves about Endless Legend. While beautiful, it is just too damn hard to see exactly what is going on without quite a bit of effort. Should be easier to glance and gather info.

Yeah, I agree with the criticism of the map in WoM.  The best word I can think of is "muddy" to describe it.  I would love to merge the graphics of EL with the game mechanics of WoM.  I love the graphical design of EL, though I do agree it can be a little cluttered at times.

In the end though, a game which is beautiful, polished, bug-free, and well-engineered is worthless to me if the game mechanics don't click for me.  I'm willing to put up with all sorts of horrific UI design, bugs, and graphical ugliness as long as the mechanics click.  I realize that's not true for everyone though, it's just my own particular approach to games.

Are you guys speaking from the Das video's or the actual game, because in the game I find the map really clean and quite easy to navigate.  I would call the maps in warlock 2 and AOW3 somewhat cluttered but not WOM's.

For me:

EL: Speaking from first hand experience, lot of it!

WoM: I'm speaking from watching Das's videos. So far this hasn't been the deal-breaker for me, I'm waiting to see more how this one turns out, as I've seen some not great reviews. Of course being in development, these haven't deterred me from buying forever, just have me playing the waiting game.

From the videos...  But I don't see how it could much different actually playing the game.

Haven't played EL, but from watching the vids... graphics look gorgeous, but yeah some things appear a bit unclear on the map... those anomalies look kinda hard to spot.  I guess if you know what you're looking for it might be different.

Actually you have it exactly right. The anomalies are really the only thing hard to spot. Some are simple, others aren't. In the zoomed out map mode, it's also sometimes easy and sometimes difficult, depending on terrain.

Well, that and the elevation changes aren't super obvious without really taking a close look sometimes. Mostly when the elevation drop is behind rather than in front. Usually a quick mouse scroll in for a closer look is all that is needed.

Well, all I can say is that the map never feels cluttered when your playing the game, it is actually quite charming and has a really nice fantasy feel to it.

Tatty are you with the dev team? hahaha

I've been playing it and I can tell you that pretty much all of the complaints here are valid and complaints I have from actually playing it. I just don't see how this game will compete with what's out there right now.

It's in early beta, you cannot expect it to compete with giants such as Legendary heroes.  When the game is done, at most, it will be a nice complement to such games.

This is not just some other so-so EA title, this is a possible remake of MOM, it is bound to stair up some interest, and as far as that goes, they are doing a very good job.

A lot is not yet implemented, a lot that's still not functional, they are mainly concentrating on the bugs, but when that's sorted we can look forward to a constant flow of content (hopefully).

I really like some of the neat touches they are putting into the game, for example;  A tracker, which is a flying creature, when finish's it's turn on a mountain square will perch on top of the mountain.  When hovering over a building, cave or camp you only get a hint of what may be there giving you the constant feeling of risk.

Well.....it's out now, what do you guys think?  Looks like they have been patching furiously, but still needs a ton of polish and A.I, help.  If they keep on it though I'll pick it up in a month or two.

Never did end up picking it up, and sounds like it was a very premature release.  I'll keep an eye on it though, it may mature into something good.

This looks AMAZING!

Will be keeping a very close eye on this game.

Initial impressions:

- don't like how the units are so big relative to the landscape around.

- LOVE the spiritual MoM succession

- Will wait and see what the AI is like...

Worlds of Magic had so much promise....a Let's Play by a fan of 4x would be helpful to see how it is.

I feel like I will get it eventually but it's way after many other games. Also, considering the premature release, Steam autumn sale at the earliest.

WoM has come a long way since release. I like it. It's not the best thing since sliced bread, mind you, but it's just about as good as AoW3 in my book.

But did you like AoW3?

I did not particularly care for it myself.

I felt pretty screwed after AoW3 honestly. I read over a lot about it before I bought it the day it launched. I had even read dev posts saying they were going to add in other races For Free, not turn them into expansions and DLC. They left out a LOT at launch that they said they would add then they turn around and charge you for it when it was supposed to be ready at launch. I wasn't about to waste money on halflings, but I did pick up the undead addition, which was the only thing that made it playable to me.

The game its-self is actually pretty cool, the way they went about making it and charging everyone for bits and pieces really pissed me off though, so Fk them. I'm going to wait until all the rest of the DLC's are out and then pick them up on a Summer Sale or something when they drop down to a ridiculously Low Price, because they don't deserve the money for lying to everyone like they did.

Personally I hope those devs/that company goes out off business and the rights to AoW get picked up by a developer who doesn't lie and jip their customers out of money.

My website, eXplorminate4X.com, is currently re-reviewing WoM as a featured reeXamination. Should be thorough enough for those looking for a renewed look

So your issue was more with Triumph than with AoW?

I can agree with that, but I also just felt that AoW3 was very blah.  I did wait for whatever big sale off Steam and picked it up with all DLC for ~$10.  That was reasonable, it was probably worth that, but compared to EL it just left me flat.

I'm hopeful that WoM is different enough that it will keep my interest longer, but I'm taking the wait and see with it too.  Looking forward to your rereveiw werewolf
