Galactic Civilizations I Firing Animations Bug

I just purchased Galactic Civilizations I Ultimate on Steam.  Galciv I suddenly crawls when the AI fires upon my ships -- this takes a minute or two to play the attack animation.  There's got to be a standard workaround.  Can someone please point me to a FAQ or list of things to try to fix it?  Alternately, can I turn off firing animations?
