Three interesting things about Windows 9

Three interesting things about Windows 9

The first is an adaptable start screen. MS has learned from its faux pas with Windows 8. W9 will adapt itself to whatever you happen to be running it on: If a keyboard and mouse are attached, then W9 (codenamed “Threshold”) will give you the desktop mode. If not, and if you have a touch enabled device, W9 will load the mobile mode.

The second: The Start Menu is coming back. The elimination of the Start Menu was a blunder on MSs part. Perhaps the worst of those tied to W8. So, a brand new Start Menu is coming. The right half is the mobile app mode, the left half being the old desktop type menu, as you can see below:

This will allow you to open the mobile apps while W9 won’t ‘forget’ you’re in the desktop mode.

The third thing is that there’s a rumor that it might be free for users of W8.1 Update2. I wouldn’t bet on it, though…if only because W8 was such a money loser. W8.1 Update2 will happen in August. Also, W9 might happen at year’s end, but more likely in April 2015.

Not likely, John...and more's the pity.

If folks aren't griping about W9 that much, and Brad gushes about the under-the-hood stuff like they did with W8, and there aren't a ton of compatbility issues with some of my older stuff, I'll be happy with W9.

W7 has some compatibility issues with older stuff- a friend of mine who does dev work has to use XP to work on some older projects.

Yeah, I've been using win8 for a while on my tablet/laptop and besides the cognitive dissonance between having apps load as apps and software load as software* I think there are a couple of nice updates to the OS. If they build on that for win9 I could definitely see myself using that for my next format. Might even get a huge touch-screen if they come in gamer-format.

*Yeah, I still can't even describe it right - but you can have an IE window open as a normal program and you can have it open as an app and that's two different things that you access differently for no purpose at all.

I'm waitin' on 9. If its a freebie upgrade from Win7SP1 I'm all over it........maybe......if it works......

I bought the full install of Win8 last year, and did not care for the need to hunt around for everything I use. Next is the fact that most of my apps would have to be upgraded and as I'm on disability, I can't afford to upgrade any time soon. I'll stick with Win7 until I have to be pulled kicking and screaming to a version of Windows I think I might like and there's no more support for 7(yes I know it will be sooner than later).

^^^^ Something to think about.

I can't say I understand why there are tiles on the right side of the start menu.  I imagine Modern Mix does a better job.

As for the tiles on the start menu, I would hope that one could opt for a classic menu at installation should they so desire... or to make it swappable to a tiled formal on the fly, if/when required.

If not, then Stardock will inject some sanity and provide us a Start8-like start menu.

Still, Win 9 will undoubtedly be an improvement over Win 8 with new features and improvements to speeed, stability and usability.

I do hope so...

...but again I MUST re-iterate...Stardock's role SHOULD be to IMPROVE a GUI, not make it actually workable because the original is simply and fundamentally flawed...;)

...and then there *is* the hard coding.  ;)

Depends on what the meaning...  ;P

Looks like another O/S that needs some skinning to make it palatable.

Stardock should thank Microsoft for contorting their OS UI into something so unpalatable that it creates a market for Stardock to exploit with a fix. :)

Some of us prefer the default look of Windows. :-"

live tiles on the start menu doesn't make sense in my opinion.

MS probably should create a notification center for their phone operating system first, and when they accomplished that, find a way to incorporate this into the desktop.

the OSX Yosemite notification center looks pretty great, those tiles on the start menu are just sad.

3 interesting things about Windows 9...

I will complain for a few months about how horrible it is.

I will say Windows 7 is better.

I will eventually buy a computer with Windows 9 and then say it's the best thing since sliced bread.

O:) ^_^

Hum, reading the above and the posts got me to thinking about creating.  Let's see, we'll start with the start menu, as usual.  Guess I'll eliminate the top, one less graphic, right, right.  No user icon, well, two.  Hum, left and right places and progs.  Oh well, who needs them, well just eliminate the whole thing, and wholla, no graphics to do.  All there will be is text.  Mouseover's, hum, oh well who needs mouseovers, it'll be fun trying to guess what item you are.  Moving on, pop ups, oh well, who needs pop ups, they are annoying anyway (or is that just on the internet?).  Oh well, start menu buttons, who needs them, you can always control alt, delete to get out.  Now on to the task bar, well, let's see.  Hum, the start menu is transparent, why not the task bar, after all you do have icons right.  The tray, well it always shows up anyway.  And, after all everyone knows where the start button goes.  WoW, we're on a roll.  Now on to the frames.  You guessed it, who needs frames.  Buttons, well, a thing of the past, after all you know where the buttons are.  Tools, who needs tools in this day and age anyway.  We'll just eliminate them too.  Well, whala, a new transparent blind done in less than two minutes.  Can you beat that.

Hmmmmm....lemme see. I know....I'll make an smx to cover all the stuff MS leaves out. Then a Xion to replace MS's music player then a rainy for the calendar....use the Atomic Clock to replace the native one and.....Rainmeter does a pretty good job covering everything else. WB's take care of the heavy stuff....wow...a whole OS with just a few apps at a very reasonable price I might add.

And what reality do you live in I ask me. :w00t:

I guess in Microsoft's world of eliminating and your's in replacing with stuff.  Might make an interesting combination.
