The saying "ALL things come to an end!" have proven itself to me and in this instance it means that ID is in decline.
When the first DOOM came out, it was the BEST computergame in terms of technological advancement with it's 3D graphics. Couple that with superb music, gameplay, atmosphere, multiplayer, weapons & monsters together with the cool levels and you got 1st class game. In short, everything was fantastic about the game!
DOOM II was actually an expansion since it's the same engine. More monsters, weapons and ofcourse, levels but still the same game.
DOOM III lived on its predecessors legacy and was the biggest thing since the 3D cards but it wasn't an allstar game like DOOM was....it was good but NOT the same type of game.
Also, there have been so many different shooters so I think it's impossible to make something like DOOM again with the same impact.
It's like Half-life. The original was so good since it introduced new, GOOD things to the genre that worked! The sequel expanded on what made the original great and introduced some cool, new things while continuning the story.
DOOM 4 will probably become a good shooter but it will NOT have the same impact that the original had. It might even become great but without some great members of ID that left I fear that they will continue to be "a good developer" but not the best like they once were.
