Dev Stream Today (Friday, June 6), Noon Pacific Time

http://www.twitch.tv/stardock

There's a big patch in the works, and we want to talk to you about it.

Join our weekly dev stream at www.twitch.tv/stardock at noon Pacific time today (3pm Eastern, 9pm CET) to ask lead designer Paul Boyer whatever you like about the upcoming Alpha 3 patch. The big topics are:

  • Starports (as seen on last week's stream)
  • Shipyard redesign (much improved interface and reworked hardpoint system)
  • New planet system (every planet has its own unique look, hexes conform to where its continents are, and more)
  • AI improvements

As always, we love having some questions left here on the forum to prime the pump on the air -- whether you can make the live stream or not, please drop any topical questions in this thread and we'll try to get to them on the stream.

If you miss the stream or just want to revel in its glory all over again, you can always catch previously aired streams on our Twitch channel or on our YouTube channel. This one should be up on YouTube sometime later tonight; it usually involves some minor editing and re-encoding and uploading, which doesn't happen instantly.

Thanks as always for your support!

edit: YouTube replay is up :)

Can't wait to see what you are bringing on this fine day.

Edit: Here are some questions...

There has been some discussion on the forums about the Borders of each civilization. The sphere (blob) of influence being seen as your territorial border vs. a cultural border. Are there going to be any changes on how Galactic Civilization is going to deal with the borders?

In regards to the shipyards, are there still more models being added to each of the civilization pieces?

The last video showed up some of the new tech tree. Will there be tech tree automation? In other words, can I just set the computer to choose the research options for me, if I so choose.

The models for equipment that can be attached to the ships is great, but will there be a way of changing these models from within game? What options do we have to hide these particular equipment attachments to the ships? (Could there be a hide piece option or do we have to cover it up.)

I know the AI is a little ways off (and kind of early), but has the ability to play multiplayer in the office been helpful in creating strategies for the AI?

Yha I usually can't watch the live stream so can you ask this question for me bro.

"Can I repair ships at my ship yards, if so please make sure its possible at friendly shipyards too."

DARCA. ;)

Question for Dev Stream.

1) Is it possible to request a part like S0_Structure18 in GC2 be made.  It is the one that looked like a sub hull.  It was good for warp nacelles too.

2) Will Ship info screen where it gave size, weapon listing, crew etc on a nice grid background, be available in GC3.

Will it be possible to have multiple prerequisites for tech?

Damn, came all too late, got the last 5 min only. But I must say it looked magnificantly cool with that ship inside the orbital ship yard.

I'm liking the working planet screen look :)

Plus, the major highlight is Adam's ship. I cannot wait to see another one for the next dev stream.

Nice to see the game advancing. If you want our opinions on the symmetry/amount of weapons shown and are actually equipped, I think that for functional parts the game should show how many are actually equipped, and not how many duplicated by symmetry etc. For decor then go it it doesn't matter, but for weapons and armor then it's important as it might push people to down a research path just so they can deck their ships out how they want and strive for that cool weapon!

You didn't talk about planets at all :(

Ah well, a week to go

They were going to but the planet screen messed up on the stream. So, I think that they avoided them out of principle.

Regarding visible functional parts.

A button for that would be perfect.  If it didn't matter, make it a button for each part.  IG I can have that engine invisible but have the rail gun nice and obvious at the front.  You already do animation and scaling by the part.

As a fan of cultural expansion, I too would be curious to see how they plan on dealing with this.

I favor looks cool over accurate number of parts when it comes to symmetry effecting functional parts.

Rats I missed it! >:(

When are we getting some news about interesting gameplay? The game seems rather dull at this stage.

Making lego ships, adjacent building bonus, hexes is not very interesting in my view.

It will be Christmas soon little Ashberry. Jk

I really wanted my question to be asked but I guess can't get it all... :/

Does anyone else think Pauls impersonation of critics and players is funny? Like when he dose that high pitched voiced. Its funny.

btw the galaxy is looking alive with all the clouds and pretty planets and marble looking suns. Its like look at the galaxy through a snow globe. Great stuff.

Yes.  I just had to agree with this! I was impressed when he showed the view of the galaxy on ecliptic perspective.  Pretty stuff.  More good use of good art.  It's the kind of thing that makes the person looking over your shoulder say, "Hey, what was that?"

On the topic of symmetrical display of functional parts:  I am strongly against visual misrepresentation.  I am thinking of this in terms of weapons visualization, but it should work for other parts as well.  For automatic designs, have the ship designer place a single weapon somewhere along the spine.  A double weapon can have the symmetry as shown already.  From then on you do even numbered weapons as you have already shown and you do odd numbered weapons by placing a single one on the spine.   You could possibly get creative and when there are several weapons use the spine for some of them. But please, don't lie to me with your visuals.

I especially admire the adaptation of surface texture between races.   Nice trick.

Exploding planet screens are fun!   Can we keep them, please?

And I liked the animated ship!!  I really did.  At one point there was an animated part, nice touch.  It was commented that it was "throbbing".  Slow down the period of the light change and it might look less like a throb and more like some sort of operation.  Is that going to be a controllable feature?

I really like the symmetry idea with the shipyard.

Will there be a way to place 2 of something (weapon, engine, etc) and have it symmetrically use the 2 things placed as actual items. (Instead of putting down 2 weapons and having 4 items show up?)

Terrible wording for the question, I know. Basically, can I use symmetry to make the ships less "busy?"

Since it is almost Friday and I have not seen a post whether you will be on twitch tomorrow, the question, will there be a twitch show tomorrow? Or Adam are you taking more time than expected in making a new ship ;)
