IDE vs SATA

IDE vs SATA

I have a sneaky suspicion that my hard drive is going south. The only other drive I have is a 200 GB IDE hard drive. I was curious if I would see much of a speed drop. Been looking it up, but figured you all would know.

One tech is newer and better than the other, so technically one would be "faster."  However, that doesn't mean much in the real world when there are others factors.  My guess.  Your system will be slower but I doubt much of a noteable difference.

It has nothing to do with being nice, but everything to do with the fact that you are a 'computer tech' who by your own admission is advertising his services to others.  That being the case, you should indeed not be having to ask such a question and if you do you should absolutely expect the reaction you've received from myself and some others.

Well to be fair, nowadays everyone who can Google and remove a simple hard drive is a computer tech.  Much in the same way everyone who has a DSLR is a "pro" photographer now.

Is that so wrong?

Not as far as I'm concerned.  Google's great, but can also cause more confusion that clarity.  It can also make a person "want" a bunch of things that don't really matter much at all.  :)

Thanks guys, Now I just need to find a IDE cable. :)

One of the problems I frequently come up against when searching Google/Yahoo for tech advice is an abundance of 'sell you this and that' answers and very few relevant ones.... no matter how you word you inquiry.  That's alright if you're looking to buy, but it's as useless as tits on a bull if you need relevant tech advice/information.  That has always been the problem with commercial, advertising based search engines... sales first and bugger the rest.

So yeah, I see kona's point of asking people here.  I have done so myself after finding little or nothing of relevance on Google or Yahoo searches.  For mine, given the help I've received thus far, the imnformation here tends to be more reliable and easier to understand... especially when it comes from somebody like yrag.

Okay, so here's another thought/slant on this thread.

If somebody else had asked the same question [maybe with a little more information] they would likely have gotten far more respect and useful responses to assist them, so why is it that kona ALWAYS atracts snide and snarky responses?  He may not always provide enough information, maybe because he lacks the confidence or know-how, and thus his posts are short/without great detail, but that should NOT make him the target of ridicule and disrespectful remarks.

So, WCers, how about it?  Let's afford kona the same respect we expect to receive ourselves.

How people respond to an individual is entirely up to that individual.  How the individual comes across, how he/she interacts, reacts, frames relationships sets the tone for any further interactions with others down the road.  Kona has (either intentionally or by some other cause not relevant to this particular point) often times come across as obtuse (to say the least) in his interactions on these forums.  This cause has an effect.  Evident in many (sometimes lengthy) threads here.

Yes, we all expect to respected.  If we are, is it because we demanded it or asked for it?  I believe it is because in our actions we demonstrated it, so it was reciprocated.  I have not always demonstrated respect and have therefore not always received it either but I firmly believe that the individual determines the way they are interacted with.

Okay, I'll put it another way... to you.

What if you were in some way unable to communicate your want, needs or ideas clearly, would you appreciate being treated with any less respect than others on the forums.  What if through no fault of your own you cound not express as well as others here on the forums, would you like it if you always receeived snide comments from people who SHOULD know better?  We're supposed to be better than that.

I'll just say this, not many of us actually know kona or understand the difficulties he has, but ignorance is no excuse to constantly belittle him or anyone for their inabilities, etc.  When one has difficulties expressing one's self [for whatever reason], especially in writing, it is going to be difficult for them to askfor/demand respect and understanding.   Still, that is no excuse no to give it.

What I wish is that if someone sees an irritation or a problem interacting with ANYONE - here or anywhere, he/she would simply exercise good sense and walk away from it.

So many 'incidents' could be prevented by just that small piece of common sense.

Afterwards, trying to repair the damage (even if one was "right") is simply impossible.

You can always use the pm available by clicking under the person's nickname. By using that, nothing goes public. People won't be irreparably hurt.

As an old guy, I've been around long enough to have made my share of such errors, so I just offer this as simple advice, and hope I'll have the sense to just take it when it happens. When I see potential problems which might develop in a thread (or those which have happened) I toss in a shop to lighten peoples' moods (laughter really is the best medicine in some cases).

Here's a parable for you:

"Abner goes to see his rabbi.

"How can I help you, Abner?"

"I'm worried about my marriage because of Hedi's temper. I'll be minding my own business, and out of nowhere she loses it. Makes me insane, and I have no idea how to fix it."

"Hmph. Abner, I have a solution. I have a bit of miracle water here. Next time Hedi snaps, just put some in your mouth and swish it around. Do not swallow! Just swish until she's done, then excuse yourself, and spit it out in the bathroom."

"Sounds kooky, Rabbi, but I'll try anything."

A week later, Abner returns.

"Rabbi, it worked! She started shouting, I started swishing, and like a miracle she calmed down in front of my eyes. When I came out of the bathroom, it was like we were college sweethearts again!"

"Wonderful!"

"What's in the water, Rabbi? Is it a special blessing? Did you bring it from Jerusalem? Is it medicated?"

"It's just tap water, Abner. What makes it work is keeping your mouth shut."

Please folks, be generous with forgiveness and stingy with criticism...we all have our faults and foibles. May others please exercise 'selective blindness' to them.
Thanks for putting up with ine. :)

Just remember...

X( ^_^ lol that cat pic...
Also the shop with the hamster rig is pretty neat Doc...

Ok back to topic.
transfer speed for IDE ranges from 5MB/s up to 130MB/s maybee a little higher
Sata depending on what Sata drive is used
(First gen 150MB/s)
And because im not sure about the real numbers for the new drives i will post a neat info of SanDisk
That might be helpfull
link
keep in mind that speed has always to do with the size of the drive- the smaller a HDD the less movement has to be made to reach certain Data = Faster

I used to have box loads of spare computer parts just in case I might need them in the future.  I've helped people from WC with parts and money with the promise that they don't say anything as I'am not looking for any praise.  Being nice and helpful doesn't need a pat on the back.  But as Kona will tell ya, I can be an ass.  Hehe..  Sometimes for the fun of it and sometimes because I feel it warrented.

SATA or IDE, who really cares.  Your using it for your own use and not in a business, so who really care about a few seconds of time because of speed.  I'am using a SATA at the moment but I do have an IDE as a spare(with the cables) from a past machine.

I turn the machine on, hit the head, get my coffee and when I come back the machine is ready to use.  I'am happy.

That would be easy to abide by if kona could go into just one thread and not be treated with contempt, disdain, disrespect.  Sadly, that is not the case, somebody ALWAYS has to resort to being an ass and be disrespectful, etc.  I just asked the community for it to end because it is childish and unnecessary.

Anyway, I'm out of here.

Me too...lol. And I am a cut up. Always have been. Kona is just easy to have fun with. But anyone who knows me knows I mean no hurt to Kona. I'm just a sarcastic cut up.

So, I say if we need to accept Kona as he is, he can do likewise and accept us as we are.

Kona, I have a blue million IDE cables. If ya can wait a few days for it to get there, I'll send ya one.

You need a double header, or just a single?   Do you have jumpers for the IDE drive? If you decide to add a second one later, you'll need jumpers.

Let me know.

Still offering my muthaboard...which is truly superior. No need for IDE/SHMIDE or SATA/Shmatta.

I use the MoBabacus and it's faster than a baboon outside Loma Linda:grin:

Not entirely accurate sheepherder. Most of them by default will have the jumper already set to the CS position, which denotes Cable Select. It will detect if it is Master or Slave depending on the position in the lineup of the cable. Assuming it's a dual header cable.

Well, I was just being sure he had jumpers. I have "inherited" IDE drives in the past that had the jumpers removed. Not everyone has spares.

Thanks tho, Buff.
