Questions from an utter newbie

I just bought GC2 Ultimate off of Steam yesterday and am about to sit down and start my first game but I'd like to ask a couple of questions that may hopefully get answered before I finish my first session later this afternoon.

First, I can't find any manuals anywhere. I looked in the Steam folder but there's nothing there. Do we get these? I really like to read the manuals to get a feel for what the game is designed to do.

Second, while waiting for the game to download, I read that there are some problems with the AI researching tech. There seem to be a couple of mods, at least, that can fix these. Which one is the best to use, fixes the most to give me a good game?

Right, that's it for now. No doubt there will be more questions after my first sesh... B)

My copy of the game is directly from Stardock, and it does have a manual. I'd be surprised, if the Steam-version doesn't have one. Have you tried right-clicking on the game-entry in your library, or looking through the links on the right side?

As for your second question, that one has come up in another thread very recently. I answered it there, as far as my biased status allowed (I'm the maker of one of those mods).

Just to be on the safe side, here are the links to the mods:

MarvinKosh's Space Weapons Fix Mod

Tolmekian's Tech Tree Fix

Autumn Twilight

Altarn's Polished Twilight

Cheers. I'm fairly new to Steam so haven't got used to right-clicking stuff yet. Off to do that now...

Eek! Nothing in either of those places so I decided to have another look in the game folder and found it there. I missed it first pass.

A further post just to let you know that I decided to run your Autumn Twilight mod and am playing my first proper game with it. Two hours in, so far so good. Thanks.

I personally prefer Tolemekian's Mod, it preserves much of the original game but whips the AI into shape somewhat. I'd recommend setting the Ai difficulty to Tough to start with, this means the AI has full use of it's resources without being given economic bonuses over the player. A good way to learn the ropes.
