Vista?

Hi guys,

I've been a fan of galciv since the first one came out over a decade ago!  As soon as I saw galciv3 on steam I bought it immediately without checking the OS requirements.  I've heard rumours that it is possible to get the game running on Vista 64-bit, but for the life of me I can't figure out how, it just doesn't lanch at all, nor does anything appear on the task manager.  In the mean time I'm going to try and find a reasonbily priced windows 7 upgrade...but if anyone knows a work around you would be saving me £50-£100!

Any help would be greatly appreciated..I need to get my galciv fix!

Thanks!

Logically i would expect it to be able to work since Windows 7 is pretty much Windows Vista with the atrocious memory management fixed. Though because of that I would have thought it would need more memory on vista.

Could be it runs ansOS version check  and doesn't recognise vista. Anyway I think you should upgrade your os anyway. Vista is awful and Microsoft should have given a free windows 7 upgrade to everyone who bought it if they had any decency.

I can well understand your eagerness to get the latest GalCiv, and how that eagerness can lead to missing a few important requirements. The description of GalCiv III in the Steam Store lists the requirements for running GC3. These include Windows 7 (as you discovered), and certain other minimum and recommended systems requirements, such as a Dual-core processor (minimum) or an Intel Core I5 processor or equivalent (recommended), 4GB RAM (min) or 6GB RAM (rec), 512 MB DirectX 10.1 compatible Video card (min) or 1GB DirectX 10,1 compatible Video card (rec), and a minimum display resolution of 1280x800 (this last has caused some confusion because the game lets us play at 1280x768).

You may wish to check the entire system requirements list Steam has for GC3 and make all of the upgrades you need at the same time.

Also very important: We have discovered (as is typical with any new game in an external Alpha test cycle) that current GPU drivers are also required.

I hope this helps, and welcome.

GC3 isn't the first game that I have seen check for minimum requirements, and not just the OS. Unfortunately, with GC3 in its Alpha stage, the game doesn't tell what minimum requirement is missing. This should be a suggestion to the devs, even for the first build of an external Alpha.

EDIT: I have just opened a ticket asking the devs to include an explanation of minimum requirement failures before quiting.

I would guess that star dock don't want the extra issues getting it to work on an unpopular and obsolete OS which most people either never used or upgraded from since it made their computer run like a dog. If I sound better I am, that I had to pay to upgrade to windows 7.

Thanks for the replies guys, I've ordered a copy of windows 7 and have my fingers crossed that that will solve my problems, I meet the other system requirements.

Can't wait!

I'm running it on Windows 7 home premium 64bit. No issues so you should be ok.
