[0.0.2.0][Bug] Start-up Warning and nVidia Optimus(tm) technology

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/75549875/GalCiv3/Alpha/debug/debug040314.err

Here is the debug-error file.

I just upgraded to the next iteration of the alpha, when I start the game it produces a warning stating that my video drivers are out of date for my intel cpu video card (HD 3000). I am running Optimus(tm) and the correct video card currently running the game is the nVidia one not the intel. Mind you the DxDiag will only display info about the intel video card, and does not detect the nVidia 555m (which is up-to-date with drivers)

I have updated my intel graphics card drivers, and the game doesn't produce the warning anymore, but the game should not be detecting the video card that is not running the game.

I am sorry to say that when I went to download your debug.err file the dropbox link was broken. Please resend so I can look further into this issue. Thanks!

Are you forcing the Nvidia card via the Nvidia Control Panel?

Yes, I am. I always have it set that way. This bug was present in FE:LH. It is a bug with dxDiag as well. It doesn't detect the nVidia 555m video card, because of the optimus.

I'm running an old Alienware m14x

After review, developers noted that the Nvidia is not being detected in the dxdiag and that the driver error is still noted in the debug.err. Could you please provide a debug.err after updating the Intel driver updates? That way we could see if the game was able to get the Nvidia after that.

Yeah all those 'auto switch' technologies for laptops were a bit of a wonky thing....

Okay,

Here is the updated one

I thought this forum post of nVidia might be helpful.

I'm also on the IRC #GalCiv if you need to chat.

Thanks for reporting this! We will change the way the warning error displays. So that the error should no longer display if the non-compatible card isn't the main card being used.

*Edit*
Let me know if you need any more clarification or anything!

I don't notice anywhere where the game says it's using it, so here is a picture of my GPU activity when running the game.

I'll report when I find other things. Cheers.

I'd like to report this:

After the alpha 2 update, when I launch the game it says that my drivers may be too old. I've got switchable graphic cards ( intel and radeon ). I can download drivers only from the HP site ( I've got a pavilion dv7). The newest driver hp gives has been released in 2011.

Anyway the game works after clicking ok, but it is quite frustrating to get it everytime...

Do you think I'll be able to play the final release end every expansion in future?

Thanks

What prevents you from downloading the drivers from Intel and/or AMD directly?

As a side note, I used to believe that the manufacturer of the computer (HP, IBM/Lenovo, etc.) made upgrades to drivers. I have learned since that such is not the case. I have also learned that the best source for drivers is from the card manufacturers themselves.

There are a few exceptions to this. Special drivers for your specific specialized components. The CPU aka intel graphics driver should be upgraded directly from Intel. That is what I did when I upgrade the driver (I didn't even bother checking with Dell).

If the computer is under warranty and they have the drivers on their site, then just for tech support necessities get it from their site. But out of warranty, keep your own computer working as it should be, update your drivers. (You might be surprised by increased performance)
