Absolutely critical advice for new players

I play a lot of multiplayer and this is seriously pissing me off. Many players, even the skilled ones, leave the game far too early. They think that just because 2-3 teammates left, their chance of victory is hopeless. That is the most absurd and unfortunately, the most widely believed myth in multiplayer today. Most of them usually still have a few planets left!!

To use a football analogy, you don't abandon the game just because your team is down two touchdowns. If Tim Tebow followed the habits of most of the sins community, he would have never won all those games in the 4th quarter, and henceforth be known as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Likewise, a grandmaster chess player doesn't forfeit because he has only a pawn and king left. You can still force a draw through a stalemate or 50 max turns rule. With sufficient skill, you might even eek out a victory.

Same thing with sins. I've seen more than 50 games where a single player beat his opponents after all his teammates left. The reason its not impossible is because the opposing side underestimates you and slacks off on microing and macroing. Meanwhile, you are at over 110% energy level. Plus, contrary to popular opinion, the AIs are actually very powerful and can beat over 90% of ICO players.

So I'm going to leave this advice to the newcomers: don't ever quit. Even if you only have one planet left with a marza and a couple of flak ships, that is still enough to turn the tide of the game. Ignore the rants and tirades of the so-called "skilled" players about bla bla bla lag, ignore their talk of putting you on a "ban-list," and ignore the insults aimed at your "unsportsman-like" conduct. You know whats unsportsman-like? Being a quitter. Your parents didn't raise you to be one, did they? If you follow these guidelines, then maybe, just maybe we can change the deviant, profligate, and corrupt culture of the multiplayer community.

Thank you.

WUT

Seriously, that is the biggest problem if you don't leave the game if you only have a few planets left, and a couple of ships, only the very best players can do something about it (forgive me as I am unfamiliar with the current rankings to know who are the best nowadays). Not everyone finds it fun to roam the map hopelessly with his small task force and trying to build up one or two planets somewhere if his team is suffering at all fronts (fun level is lower than starting a new game).

If it is 4V5 that can still be a win for the four, but it is an extremely rare thing to win against more players like 2v5 (and against as skilled players as your teammates are), but if there are noobs, of course the situation can be different.

I think this would be a better advice: ONLY LEAVE IF ((THERE IS NO CHANCE OF WINNING AND)) YOUR TEAM ALREADY AGREED ABOUT IT. this is the most correct situation here, not the "never quitting" that you suggest...

Oh, and do you want to force everyone to suffer for several long minutes until their forces are completely destroyed and are forced to leave (defeated)? It is not much fun to see your situation deteriorating without any chance to survive, unless your team is willing and can provide you a new "homeworld"?

I think quitting is acceptable if the player is somewhat nervous about the annihilation of his main fleet or walking into a crippling trap, or surrender if he sees no chance for his team to win, dragging the game for hours even if it's clear the other team already won.. In this situation a ban is the solution.. (ofc if that player does this many times).

AI powerful? lol am I missing something? Back in the days AI was crap, and clearly not a good replacement of a really skilled player... has it changed? Do you get a cruel AI now if someone quits and not a goodfornothing one?

Yes it can defeat even skilled players, BUT only if the player is attacked by a strong opponent AND the AI at the same time at different sides.

AIs were buffed in a recent patch if im not mistaken. They now spawn as unfair difficulty. This means they get a ridiculous income bonus that outstrips all but the best eco players. Heavy cruisers sub-40 minutes is not uncommon for an unfair AI.

Uhh what? i am being 100% serious here aresiv. I witness numerous games where three or less players achieve a roaring comeback. Some of them im ashamed to admit are those where I left early. Maybe if i created a thread claiming the VL titan needs buffing you might have a point. Otherwise, you should actually log in to ICO before posting in the multiplayer subsection.

Sinkillr trolls.

Yeah, felt this from the first second, and from his other posts/comments it won't surprise me.

I am not trolling, I have no idea why you think so. Maybe you should actually counter with facts and analysis rather than accusing innocent posters of being trolls. It is disheartening to see this great forum be ruined by the likes of ryat and aresiv. Ryat especially does nothing but post useless comments like that one; how is he not banned yet?

Not knowing any of the participants very well, I can only observe, Sinkillr, that YOUR post above is no more useful.  Can you honestly argue otherwise?

Relax.  You posted regarding what you quite obviously knew was a controversial subject.  Expect pushback.

I expect and appreciate pushback, but thats not what ryat is doing here. He posts a half-baked "response" that does nothing more than fuel his trolling addiction.

I forgot to add only people who actually play multiplayer should respond to this.

That's because I only post such useless things on your threads. Or other trolls.

Should I even mention the thread relating to Sleeper never leaving games, in which Sin decides to pull a full 180 on this very topic?  No, I need not...

No. Even as a failure at an April Fool's Joke, no.

Sins games can literally last for hours longer than necessary if a player is determined to drag it out. The community has worked pretty hard to instill the culture of quitting once you've lost, and I just sat through a needless hour of crushing every planet of a new player who hadn't learned this yet--and that's less time than it often takes, since it was only a 2v2 and he was not VL.

If you are going to lose, and everyone left on your team agrees that you're going to lose, quit.

Don't underestimate the wisdom of Sinkillr.  What he points out is a little known fact that most so called "skilled" players don't want you to know; I will probably be banned for this, but if you are lucky enough to read this before they yank this thread, the Devs put a process sequence back door into the game client.  I can't believe Skinkillr actually mentioned it in a thinly veiled attempt at trolling.  If you pair 2 flaks with 1 Marza, and group them in a certain way, they are invulnerable.  I can't say anymore, but the inside team knows what I'm talking about.  I'll leave it for newbs to figure out.

One hint:  You have to be without any amor upgrades.

Enjoy while tis thread is still up!
