My Second Game

Hi all,

I am on my second game of GalCiv2. I first played beginner and small map with 4 enemies to get the hang of it. I was researching random stuff and started getting some really good ships pretty quickly and had a good economy! Then i beat it with little difficultly. So I got somewhat cocky and am playing on challenged with everything else on random.

There are 8 players total, i'm assuming rare planets to colonize and a pretty large map. I don't think it is the biggest, but it might be. I wasn't able to colonize any planets quick enough. they kept getting taken before my 1 colony ship could get there... But i did research habital planets and got an oceanic and two radioactive planets. And very early on i quickly built starbases on the bonus things floating around, which hurt my economy early on with the upkeep of 6 starbases... lol I am now ranked last place overall. But my influence and loyalty is ranked first. And went from last to 1st in population with my 3 new planets. Everything else is ranked 2nd or 3rd and i'm last in military and 3rd to last in economy... I took so long researching different planets to colonize, im behind in researched stuff. so i'm trading, but still can't get the same ships as i did before. like battle axe m14. i'm at m3 now... i did research lasers in my first game and have traded up pretty high in torpedoes in this game, so i might stick with them this time around.

Problem now is 3 other groups have now been eliminated.... I'm not ready just yet for a war with an enemy, but i think i could take out a nearby friendly and use their planets to grow my civilization. but then i might get attacked from their ally... lol any advice? i'm really getting into this game and glad i bought into galciv3! lol should i stay quiet until my military is stronger, if so, what do i want to keep researching? my first game was a fluke and just luck i think... haha i did just get the alliance research, so maybe make some alliances and go to war with a larger group after i have a few fleets and a more advanced planetary defense researched?

also, my loyalty was at 80%, so i lowered my my taxes so i was at 100% to try and grow my population on my new planets faster. i still had like 170 credits per week/turn.  i somehow missed it, but even with lower taxes and no other big changes, my loyalty went into the low 70% area... any reason for this?

Thanks!

Here is what I would do: find out who the strongest race is, and bribe them into declaring war on as many races as possible. That should keep them busy until you are ready. With a bit of luck, that will wear them down enough for you to easily crush them.

If one of the other races asks for help, provide it to them (some low-tech ships will be good enough). You can make good friends this way. Also, position some constructors around the enemy's resource starbases. Once they get destroyed, you can easily take the resources over.

also, my loyalty was at 80%, so i lowered my my taxes so i was at 100%

I think you mean approval. Loyalty is neither ranked, nor is it affected by taxes.

Anyhow, there are three things, that negatively affect approval: taxes, being in debt for a long time, and high population. The last one is what you are seeing (and one of the biggest problems in keeping the people happy). The higher the population on a planet, the lower the approval and all bonuses to it (only the bonus for high quality planets is unaffected). If you mouse-over the approval rating in the Colony Management screen, you will get a tooltip that shows how the value is calculated.

A good max population is 14b. The approval penalty isn't too high, making it is easy enough to keep the people happy. For your economy planets, consider a population of 20b. It requires a bit more effort to keep so many people happy (i.e., more morale improvements), but the increase in tax income should more than offset this. Never go above 20b though, or you will pay an arm and a leg to keep your people happy (and still most likely fail).

thank you so much! i guess i didn't know that the game was that in depth and that option to bribe others was possible. thats pretty sweet!

so lets say my max population is 16b. then i should remove some of the buildings on my planets that increase the population growth around 12 or 14b, right? or do i not want to build buildings that increase my population growth?

Birth of the Federation didn't have a penalty for max growth. i actually wanted to max my population so it would open up more trade routes.

i'm still playing around with which planets to make economy, research or manufacturing. i understand the concept of which planets to make what, but i try to balance them in the beginning, so that if i have a planet on the other side of the galaxy, then can build ships too early on. i just need to remember to demolish old buildings and put up new ones. a little bit of a learning curve, but i really enjoy this game so far.

thanks again!
