Combat rts or computer simulated?

I remember in Gal civ II the combat was all automated by the computer (you had zero ability to affect combat outcomes aside from ship design)

I'm therefore curious if GC III will have a more RTS approach (or maybe with strategy cards ala Endless Space) or if it's still the same "sit and watch the computer animate a battle with a pre determined outcome" style of conflict? (which I felt was intensely dull after the first 3 times.)

I figure I should ask before tossing money at this game in a pre-order.

(On a side note I tried to use the search function to see if this has been asked already but it seems broken for me and just sits there loading endlessly,)

I'm not sure, but I think there may have been a thread or two on this subject.  Not 100% certain, but if I recall correctly, I believe combat is going to be handled by live action cockfights.  There's supposed to be some sort of rooster training mini-game, but so far, no details.

*Sigh* This discussion again.

From the Fighters/Drones, Command modules and carriers thread, reply 38:

Those who like the idea of designing carriers and seeing carriers in action in fleet battles I think will be happy.

Those who imagine fleet battles that play like MOO2 (i.e. where you're micro managing individual units) will be less happy.

From the I am worried about what they said about space battles in the interview thread, reply 30:

What you'll have here is if you have support ships in your fleet you'll be able to set up some battle options before the fleet battle begins. its hard to describe, it's a bit magic the gathering (select what you want to do at the start).  but you won't be controlling the ships directly.  The problem is that people would feel forced to micro manage their battles in order to get an optimal result.

From Galactic Civilizations 3 Community Interview with SpaceSector:

Ray: We have a new combat system that we are planning for after the alpha. But we don’t want to mislead people – Galactic Civilizations isn’t about fighting long tactical battles. You are controlling a civilization that spans the galaxy and your focus is on producing and placing your fleets, not in giving every order in a battle. We want to keep players engaged at the empire level and fighting for planets and systems, not in ship to ship combat.

Well if the search function ya know, functioned I wouldn't have had to make up yet another thread on the subject....

Regardless thanks for the clear answer, I'll be holding off investing in  this one for a while longer then, until a Demo is available at any rate.

Just tried the Search and it worked.

All I get is "waiting for forums.galciv3.com" in a small box on the lower left or right hand side of the screen endlessly. *shrugs*

If you ever have a question, even if it has been asked before, don't hesitate. No shame in getting updated verification.

I don't think anyone has asked whether a demo will be produced as yet. The initial release date has been stated as some unspecified time in 2015. Since demos are based on the final release, I wouldn't expect a demo before then.

Frogboy seems to have zeroed in on March 27 for the start of the external Alpha test, but no date (just a lot of guesses) has been given for the start of the external Beta test (guesses by fans of somewhere late this spring to mid or late summer).

Now now. It's. Not all never and not. There will be rate of fire, accuracy, evasion, speed, ship roles, and you can make your own custom ships and there's great stuff I'm forgetting to. So it's not RTS but it's probably going to look pretty good, if not mirroring what it would look like. And there many other aspects that galciv is the best at. So hang around the forums read some funny articles and have fun talking to new people.

I, for one, am glad that the battles will not be full on tactical. If that's your thing, I would recommend Sins of a Solar Empire for that. I am very much attracted to the empire building nature of the GalCiv series and do not have the time or patience to micro-manage every battle, which I would feel inclined to do instead of trusting the AI to handle them.

p.s. I think it in poor taste to *sigh* over another common topic thread, especially when the OP said they were having trouble with the search function. I hope Silveressa is not discouraged from being part of the community here.

For those who really like tactical battles there is Sins of a solar empire and Sword of the Stars.

What I did not like "much" about Endless space Card system is the large part of it that is based on luck or randomness initially, Until one of your opponent becomes predictable to the point where you can use the same strategy against them over and over and it works every time.

Ex: You use a fleet with mostly long range lasers. Opponent uses a card to boost Shields to counter your lasers. You know he will use this card so you take a card that counters it. It is super effective.

Repeat every next battles with this opponent.

The system might be more interesting in PvP but against the AI i think It got pretty bland rather quickly.

I am eager to see what StarDock are cooking for us regarding the battle system in GalCiv III

It's been announced the ship roles will be picked before the battle. To my opinion this is very similar to endless space. I think this is the best empire building game ever. Any game I saw like this they had to dump customize ability to improve on anything that were not really improvements, but as far as combat this is not the game. Combat will be similar to endless space in the next game otherwise this is not a combat game. If you don't like turn based  empire building then you should probably wait for a demo.

Who are you people? I didn't know you all were such pessimist. And I bet your favorite color is gray. I tell Silveressa this is still a good game, and to keep her head up. And you three tell Silveressa the sun will burn her eyes. What?

Not directly, but you all told Silveressa to play a different game either SoaSE or Endless Space which was already mentioned in the OP. when a potentially awesome existing new mysterious epic combat system is coming why would you tell her to not wait for this? I want a TBS RTS game set in space and has everything I want perfectly executed. But it doesn't exist. Sure Sillveressa wanted RTC and at the least cards like in ES. But there's going to be something even better HERE. Actually I shouldn't be surprised. If you take one word from each of your names you end up with Evil monster admiral. Lol

It's been proven that being pessimistic reduces the risk of accidents by an undetermined percentage.

Edit: My favourite color is Red, and then gray...

I think this is the greatest space game ever, but not because of combat. The combat sounds like it will be similar to endless space. Endless space is another game I wouldn't recommend unless empire building, and researching is the main reason you play these games.

Games within the 4x genre provide a different niche. Multiple niche's, as do all genre's. SoTS 2 is tactical combat. Endless space is endless space. Blah blah blah

I do not want a jack of all trades master of none type game. We all have our idea's of 'the perfect game', but it'll never happen. People are too ambitious for their own good.
