Interesting…Newest OS Usage Statistics

Interesting article at Neowin.

Looks like XP usage is dropping quickly: Down 3.38% in a month. I didn’t see sample size stats, though.

By far, the highest usage for XP is in China, with a significant persentage of those pirated. Recently, China asked MS to extend XP support. That deserves a “Chutzy Award”.

Yes, I saw one on display at a local PC store and immediately fell in love with it... and not just for the looks.  3 of its drive bays are hot swappable, meaning that I can easily exchange drives without having to 'safely remove' or rebooting. They wanted $399 for it so I researched and found one for $270 at my regular online store, which is just 30 mins down the motorway if I want to save delivery time and go pick things up.

Another thought I had is dual booting without actually dual booting.  I'm looking into sort of hot swapping OS drives so I could perhaps also run Win 7 without all that boot menu stuff slowing down startups.  Another thing about the Thermaltake Level 10 Full Tower is the oodles of room inside.  It easily accomodates the largest of video cards and running 2 or 3 in SLI formation would be a breeze, given the depth and breadth of the case.

Yeah, there's a lot to like about this case.  What's more, the cooling options are great with optional liquid cooling [which I have selected] 4 internal 23cm fans an 18cm rear fan and an optional 12cm bottom fan.  Oh, and the 23cm side panel fan is louvred so the breeze can be directed to either the CPU or the GPU's. Naturally, with liquid cooling for the CPU, I will opt to cool the graphics cards

As for the desktop PC going away any time soon... bullsh!t.

While the market for low end PC's may be declining, the market for high end PC enthusiast\gameing rigs seems to be growing. Chip Manufactures like Intel, AMD & Nivida are developing faster chip sets aimed at this market every year. As new chip set are released, aftermarket companies like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte.......etc......etc.....are also continuing to develop new high end products for the PC.

To me it's sort of like the gas guzzling raw power of an american muscle car vs the fine-tuned 'engineering' of an import!
End of the_Monk's quote

Hardly a fair comparison......a PC with the same specs as your laptop would be almost as energy efficient and I doubt your laptop would even exist without the development of high end PC components, after all who would put the time and energy into the R@D required for components for such a small market.

Win8......while the interface right out of the box sucks, once you tweak it a little(Start8) it work really well, much better than any other Windows product accept maybe Win7. I'm running Win7 on three of my comp and will not upgrade them anytime soon. Running Win 8 on one PC and a Asus tablet and have nothing bad to say about the performance of Win8(I doubt the table would run very well with Win7).

Precisely!  These companies know what to produce to satisfy market damand, and while they have diversified to incorporate the portable device, the components for desktop PC's have had significant money and development invested in them despite a shift in market preferences.  Now companies like Intel, Nvidia and AMD would not be dedicating the huge resources required to develop and manufacture such components if there was no future in the market for them.

And let's not forget Apple and its latest contribution to the desktop PC http://store.apple.com/au/buy-mac/mac-pro  Now if the arse was going to fall out of the market I seriously doubt that Apple would have invested so much time, effort and money in developing such a beast... not to mention relocating its manufacture from China back to the United States.

The truth is, there will always be gamers, enthusiasts and businesses who will depend on the desktop PC to apply their particular trade/skill, etc.

Hey Philly, nice to see you again... and yeah, the case is a beauty alright.  I had seen it on various websites and the like, but once I had seen it up close and personal I knew I had to have it.  It has fantastic specs... and it's HUGE!  I mean, the guy showing it to me temporarily put in the longest graphics card they had in the store [14.3"] and there was still 3 to 4 inches to spare.  I have a Gigabyte ATI 7970HD at 11.2" in my current case, which is also a full tower [not small], and there's only about 2 inches spare, meaning this new one is ginormous and I'll have to modify my desk to accommodate it.

Nope, and I don't plan on getting one, either.  With an Intel i7 4770K under the hood, no copper's gonna catch me.  Hehe, when I took it for a test drive I found doing nought to 60 was possible in 2.2 seconds, so I'll be just cruisin' when the coppers give up the chase  Trouble was, though, to do corners at 90mph I had to press Control,Shift and hold my mouse real tight.

Another reason the Desktop won't disappear has nothing to do with specs.  A desktop system requires a LOT of extra physical energy to remove in terms of Theft.

Yeah, mine weighs a frickin' ton.  Well not really, but the case alone weighs 28.4lbs... with hardware installed it is 36.2lbs  However, that's not the only reason making it difficult to steal.  Let's just say that I used some screws and a would-be thief would find it difficult to remove from its slot in my desk. In fact, by the time he/she figured it out, it would have been quicker and easier just to have taken the whole desk.

I find it very odd that Microsoft's odd numbered OS's are the ones that really perform well.

That's just it.  Windows 8 performs better than any previous MS OS iteration to date.

People of course can find patterns wherever they choose to look but that 'pattern' concerning even/odd numbered MS OS's has been most decidedly 'broken' with Windows 8 (at least in the performance category).  How 'liked' or not Windows 8 is on it's 'look' may be an entirely different thing and may suit someone else's pattern.
