Should I buy this game?

Should I buy this game?

I've been playing Star dock's titles for some years now. I first started with SoSE and Demigod, and later moved to Elemental: Fallen Enchantress and Legendary Heroes.

I've tried only one other space 4x Game and that is Endless space. I felt that the game felt rigid, traveling using space lanes in endless space felt really awkward in the sense there was no way to intercept ships without staying in orbit around a planet. Pirates felt horribly awkward often fielding more potent fleets than players in some circumstances.

The card based combat was absolutely horrid. There was a lot about the game that was unpleasant for me. Although i did get around 60 hours out of it before i decided that the game wasn't for me.

If someone could explain what makes the two series different that would be very helpful. I have quite a few friends that played GCII and told me to get it. Any help would be appreciated.

PS. List of 4x games I've played:

Civ 3, Civ 4, Civ 5, AoW II, Endless Space, SoSE, Elemental FE, Elemental LH, Eador MOBW, COE3, and a few others.

I played Civ a lot from Civ2-4, but not Civ5. I also never played Endless Space, so can't compare it to GalCiv.

Of course I can't say for sure whether you'll like GalCiv, but personally I started to love it with GC II. I had GC I before, but played it for a short while only. GC II however had all the elements I loved in Civ, except the "history" part, but a nice scifi setting is a good alternative. The game ended up being one of my long-time favourites.

If you ever played the Final Frontier Space campaign in Civ4 (incl. in one of the addons) and liked it, I'd absolutely recommend trying GalCiv to you, esp. when GalCiv III turns out to be even better than II.

I think if you liked Civ4 and 5 you will like it.

I agree. While I haven't played Civ 5 at all, I see a number of similarities between GalCiv2 and the Civilization series in general. So if you liked those games, you would probably enjoy the GalCiv games as well.

I do have family sharing with ultimate install for the OP to try.  The only concern I have is what may happen if the OP tried to activate it.  As for playing the first, it's not worth it because II improves on it in so many ways.  The ultimate edition is what I got and that comes with all expansions right outta the box and is half off right now on Steam.  Another way to look at buying the game is IF you got FE and LH for FREE, look at the $100 edition as simply buying the base and paying for the 2 games you got with coincidentally getting any future expansion/DLC for this game free.  If you want access, PM me because I am in family sharing and do not give that information out in a public forum.

I did actually fire up GalCiv 1 this year for funzies.  I originally bought it because I was really disappointed by Master of Orion 3 and needed a good 4X to sink my teeth into.  It has a retro charm to it now. :)
