Fun with the Cintiq

Over the past 20 years there has been a lot of changes in how games are made.   When I first got started, I had Deluxe Paint, Vista Pro and graph paper as my non-compiler tools.

My latest, favorite gadget is the Wacom Cintiq which lets me, very quickly, whip up UI designs to pass on to the team for critique.  Below is a screenshot of a UI mockup for something we’re working on.

4X...Crafting...just take my money!

iOS?  :pout:

Just saying, because I find the lack of good 4x games on iOS annoying. Although, I can understand the hardware requirements might have something to do with it.

I might have to try and find that gadget though.

next to the keyboard, a wacom intuos 3 is my main method of input; really only switching to a mouse for real-time gaming.  for decades i relied heavily on the mouse, only using wacoms for design, but a few years ago i started suffering from a neuro-physiological imbalance akin to half-body carpel tunnel (being right handed, my right side of course), and just sitting for extended periods can be rather painful, let alone mousing for 10+ hours a day.  as a result i began relying on the wacom more and more, and actually found the general "writing" motion to be much less taxing on the muscles along my right side.  plus, i've also discovered that this organic "writing" motion fosters my creative juices much more naturally than the mouse.  per consultation with some psychologists: i am also trying to code less in an attempt to overcome undesirable ocd thought patterns, focusing more on design.  the massive impact that our method of preferred input/output with the world inversely has back on us is truly astounding - something i now pay more and more attention to every day.

edit: whatever's going on in that ui, it has spells, quests, and turns.  color me intrigued.

Hehehe I've seen some crazy stuff being done on those Cintiq. Game design must be the best thing to do on it!

That's what I have here at home. I love my Intuos!

I just have a Wacom Bamboo or whatever. I'm still learning it. I feel like I'm decent at art as long as I am not using a mouse or modelling in 3d.

...and the UI will look EXACTLY like that  O:)

I know what a I phone, I pad, I touch, tablet, or smartphone is. I tried them. Found them inferior to the lap top. Since everything that comes out seems inferior to a computer that this gave me no incentive to keep up on new technology. I'm curious whats this.

There's an idea!   Stardock can take games with bad graphics and A.I and remake them in Nitrious :)

That looks eerily similar to the old Master of Magic UI.

the old Master of Magic UI.

Yeah it does. Master of Magic artifact crafting as well. That mock up looks very interesting.

What a tease ! ;-)

It looks almost like a MOM 2 interface. Insta-buy if so, given that it never left any of my machines since the release in 1993 ;-) Willing to believe but wasn't it difficult to secure the rights to MoM ? I think Stardock already tried no ?

Please keep the Attack: 4 swords mean : 4 * 0.3 = damage (and so on), with most spells implementing a change on that (enchanted swords, mean 0.4), Some spells + 1  Sword, etc, etc... There you go. I'm all hyped already ;-)

Lol, thread will now derail and everyone will critique the mechanics of a game that hasn't been announced yet and why or why not tactical combat should be implemented.

I apologize if my comment is out of topic and I didn't meant to hijack the thread :-) I looked the Cintiq: quite a nice tool, a pity I lack the talent to make an acquisition worthwhile.

I was joking...or trolling I donno. Was just saying since you brought up mechanics then things would derail. Since you like the mechanic someone will hate it and yadda yadda yadda. :D I'm a bit hyper I had a 5 hour energy today and I'm in a silly mood, lol.

This is quite clearly Stardock's new FPS.

Wacom tech is awesome.  I'm using a surface pro myself.  It's been a dream for notetaking, just wish it was either a bit lighter or the screen size was a bit better.  Biggest downside is that it can FE reasonably well, there goes some study time... :)

Wow, this game looks awesome already, Brad. I'm excited.

It better be hardcore 4X TBS for the PC.

Also; don't forget the naval aspects this time arround. :D
