Meet the Altarian Leader, Akari Malara

Meet the Altarian Leader, Akari Malara

(click the pic for a full-res, downloadable version)

Humanity’s allies are bloodied but unbroken in the Galactic Civilizations III timeframe. The former leader of the Republic, Eleys Mue, died at the hands of the Drengin paving the way for the Resistance to take more direct measures that ultimately pushed the Drengin off her world.  Succeeding her is Akari Malara of the Iru-Wraith'ir. She is a smart and capable woman willing to deal with the Drengin-dominated galaxy as it is, not the galaxy some of her peace-loving people wish it was. The Altarian Republic is in good -- or at least effective -- hands.

Lead designer Paul Boyer explains Akari Malara thusly:

Like the Terrans, the Altarian Republic has suffered greatly after the wars surrounding the return of the Dread Lords. They may have been wiped out entirely if not for the leader of the Altarian Resistance, Akari Malara. She kept the Altarian people united, giving them the strength to hold firm in the face of the Drengin domination of the galaxy.

While the Altarian Republic now claims to have never truly fallen, their government has been entirely taken over by the key members of the Altarian Resistance. This change can be seen in the way the Altarians now interact with the rest of the galaxy; though still looked upon as the high water mark of benevolence, they are now even less likely to trust outsiders and will often choose to stay aloof from galactic conflict rather than risking further cultural contamination.

Akari Malara herself has become an almost religious figure. The Altarian Resistance sees her as the savior of the Altarian people, and her control over her people is unprecedented in Altarian history. Even her worst critics admire her leadership, though they whisper that she is perhaps a bit too pragmatic.

There’s a lot more Galactic Civilizations III content out there already. Learn more about the Altarian Resistance and its prominent place in the Galactic Civilizations universe in the Databanks, check out PC Gamer’s in-depth preview, or listen to Paul talk everything from tutorial modes to ship design on the SpaceGameJunkies podcast.

Founders can access even more content in the Founders’ Vault by pre-ordering the game for $10 off the regular $49.99 price, or by picking up the $99 version that comes with a lifetime subscription to all Galactic Civilizations III DLC and expansions.

Update:

Fixed the confusion between Elsys Mue, the leader of the Altarian Republic and Akari Malari, the resistance leader who restored Altaria's independence.

Rudy your in with the world now. So quit talking about old soviet shit no one cares about. Not in today's America. And the above post was actually the the FUNNIEST joke I have ever heard you say. If I understood you correctly. The vodka and tea was FUNNY the Chernobyl joke was FUNNY. But no one wants to hear jokes about our country from a soviet! And you don't want us to do the same to you. Let make jokes about ourselves not each other that would be better than sinking back into the cold war.

(these words are setting of so many NSA triggers lol)

I;ve actually been trolling awhile with jokes.

Out of curiosity will all these avatars have multiple uniforms or alternate leaders? A change of clothing or headgear? Will there be multiple avatars to select from when choosing a race (not looking for different bonuses, just different presentations of an avatar or other people you have not discussed.

I like as many custom options as possible like they have on Star trek as far as looks. Plus I would like to have an option to build my own species the way they do on spore except I actually would like to see it geared for aliens and not animals,

I like the new look, the previous Alterians always struck me as a little too human. I know it's explained in the lore why this is but still...

I must say, she does remind of the Asari in the Mass Effect series.

Oh, don't worry. This isn't a revision, Altarians still look like humans. This look is just for one group. :D

Not in today's America.

Of course, you didn't like old Soviet Union so much, so you decided to build your own, with... ehm... how would you call them, with baseball and ladies?

Did you not read the entire message? America is changing, soon half the population will be speaking Spanish and English. And they won't remember the cold war because it was before their time. You could be a cool friend if you drop the "for mother Russia" speech on a TBS web site.

Hey, you asked about Russia, and those things are the only I know about Russia.

Aren't you living in Russia? Or do you have a visa to stay here?

either way alot is happening in Russia you know about. The Olympic games are there. That's something interesting. Let's talk about that.

how for 16 days the world unites just to fights over three little medals. Lol.

I love it! It is like a Minbari transformation, only in reverse. Much more interesting than a bland human with a Mike Tyson tattoo. :)

Blue is OK.  Miss the tattoos.  Even if there are really four factions, each with distinctively different appearances, miss the tattoos.  Oh, did I say that already?.

According to the GalCiv II wiki Eleys Mue was the leader of the Altarian Resistance (not republic as indicated above).

I like the new Altarian design much less.

Altarian Resistance? More like Asari resistance. Pretty but doesn't look 'identical' to humans to me.

Welll one of the Altarian factions is clearly descended from the Wraiths of Elemental, one is descended from the other human factions, I wonder what other factions survive into GC3.

I rather like the hint of elemental cross over so long as it's not too in your face.

I suspect all of the races survive, but they're all "Altarians" now. I get the sense the factions being discussed are those that exist within that broader culture and aren't really racially-based. (In other words, Akari presumably has plenty of the human-looking baseline Altarians following her, and the old Republic government was probably supported by most of the "Wraith" when it existed).

Yeah, it's pretty much confirmed that Altaria (the Altarian homeworld) is the mystical realm of Elemental. Galactic Civilizations and Elemental are in the same fictional universe.

I agree they will all count as "Altarians", but the different factions within that species are probably based on racial heritage e.g. which human/Fallen faction or factions they are descened from.

I really like the connection.

Magic is only science we haven't discovered yet.  :P

The Altarians can still use their ~magic~ (it's not really magic). I don't think it's quite to the same degree as it was during the Elemental/FE/LH period, though.

You could research it in GalCiv 2, which gave a bonus to ground combat.
