It's pretty good. It's designed well. I don't know if there is anything like it that I could give you an idea what it's like. I will tell you it's well worth the cost. 

Can it be played pretty well without having to buy in game purchases?

Yeah, you really don't have to purchase anything. You unlock most of the card abilities pretty quick. Also, each game can be played without card abilities. 

I thought it was a card game? How do you play a card game without card abilities?

Unless I'm missing it, there's very little info on iTunes about this game.

I'll give you a brief rundown.

There is 10 suits. Each has a basic ability and a few super abilities.

Anchor - locks all cards to the left

Hook - Uses one of your cards

Kracken - Forces you to place 2 additional cards on the board or draw

Map - draw a card from the discard pile

Mermaid - worth extra points

Cannon - Pick highest card from pile of your choice to discard

Sword - Steal a highest valued card from suit you do not already have

Oracle - See next card

Chest and Key - once you have both you will gain 1 bonus card for each card you have on the board when you accept the board

Super Abilites are bought in packs of 3

For example

Oracle has an ability that you can see the next 3 cards instead of 1.

The goal of the game is to have the highest total of all the top cards by the time the draw pile runs out of cards.

If you draw two of the same suit you bust.

Each level you need to reach a point goal before moving on. Each level may change the rules a bit. 

It's well worth 4.99 or whatever it cost. 

It's only $1.99.

Lol in that case RedneckDude it's a steal. Again, the game has RMT but it is NOT required. It's still a great game without it.
