Dictation software for PC

feedback from actual users before making buying dicision.

I'm finally breaking down and getting software (PC) that will allow me to dictate long texts.  Think short story length texts.  I have read the ads, and scoped out google/binged results.  Those of you who have actually used such software please share your advice, experience, etc?  This will asssit me in making a good choice.  Thanks all in advance.  :)

Hope you have a quiet room to work in, and the patience to train it. I have not used in a couple years but even one of the best, Dragon, needed extensive training and error corrections. But stick with it and both you, and the software will improve.

Dragon by Nuance is the best.

It requires a bit of training, but not hours and hours. It comes about 95-97% accurate right out of the box. It does require a relatively quiet place to do your dictation, for obvious reasons. Only a speech impediment or thick accent might prove difficult for the software.

elana, you can read more here: http://www.nuance.com/dragon/index.htm

I have it on my iPad and it's really quite good.

I hope that the software understands your accent, if it does not, than even after all the training, it will STILL cause more work in corrections and being helped up off the floor from colapsing while laughing reading the erronous text.

@ Thanks myfist and doc re dragon. I had a version of Dragon naturally speaking a year after it came out - before nuance was part of the name. It was dreadful - and when the company phoned me about getting a newer version - I expressed my misgivings. The agent on the phone was quite rude, would not address my concerns, etc. I offered to take the new version on a trial basis -and was told, flat out, "no." So I have taken their ads with a quite large 'grain' of salt. I have seen the site you referenced. Is impressive. And I am willing to go thru the training process over again. Have they changed that much? In spite of my past experience, I am inclined towards the dragon.

@Harpo: I don't have an accent! Everyone else does. Really! :)

I guess the dragon will get another bite out of my purse after all.

elana...for good or bad, a company gets the face of its support people. Sorry you had a bad experience.

Also, back when, processors were a lot slower and we had far less RAM...the program has also evolved. I think you even get their headphone and speaker now, with the program. So, I'd give it a shot because even with the iPad's microphone and limited processor, it performs brilliantly.

I used Dragon 5 years ago and it worked well. I'm sure it has even improved much more since that time.
