Best way to experience the campaigns?

Hey guys!

I'm fairly new to the game (just bought the Ultimate Edition on Steam), and, though I've played a few sandbox games, I do want to give the campaigns a try. Other posts I've read generally ignore it or mention that it isn't as good as sandbox, but I'm determined to give it a shot.

That being said, what is the best way to experience them without worrying about bugs and imbalances? When playing the first two, should I load them up through the Twilight of the Arnor loader, or should I load the other versions of the game? If playing thru Twilight, which mod works best for campaign? I'm currently running APT 1.3, which I've heard fixes many of the issues but doesn't make many other changes, but I've also heard of Autumn Twilight, which mentions fixing the campaigns. Just looking for some input from those who have played through it. Thanks for your time!

Not really sure..  i did start the campaign the other day.... dread lords.. the first two missions were total cake/boring, the third, sends death troops that can wipe out your entire fleet in a few turns..  I restarted the game a bunch of times, trying different tactics, and after about 4 hours i completely gave up...   was far more frustration than it was worth.

I tired making ships around turn 100,  after you get ships the attacks start.. I tried making ships almost from the start.. and as soon as you get ships the attacks start..  You try sneaking ships around,  and they just cheat to find you..  Trust me, i love single player games, but this one seems very very lack luster.

But if you speed through the first two missions, which shouldn't take long, you can at least experience 400 damage death ships from the start..

Honestly, it really is best to play each campaign on the version of the game it was designed for. Even with the bugs fixed, the new rules each expansion introduces can wildly unbalance the previous campaigns - this is especially bad with applying the combat system from DA onward to the Dread Lords campaign.

I fixed all of the campaign bugs in my mod, Autumn Twilight, so I'd suggest you use that.

As for imbalances due to mechanic changes, I'd say, that this makes the old campaigns (especially DL) more challenging, but they are still perfectly winnable. I'm hardly an expert in this game, but I still finished all of the campaigns several times, while playing them on Tough difficulty via TotA.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm giving it a try with Autumn Twilight for now, since I'm really only familiar with the state of the game in TotA, and I'd rather just stick with the interface that I know. Working well so far, and I'll let you know how it goes!
