Ive got this weird enemy phantom fleet that is floating around in one of my games that is proving a pain. Can I delete it from the saved game and what is the correct way to do this?

I have not heard of any tools to edit a save game. I would not expect it to be possible.
You may be able to get rid of the fleet by loading up in cheat mode and using the Ctrl-Shift-H cheat to damage it.
There is no enemy ship to select, there is just a bunch of stats floating around. When you engage this phantom fleet my ships don't shoot (as there is nothing there) yet take damage from ship that are not there...
And whats really annoying is Im way into a game!
I'm not sure that editing the saved game will help. You kind of have to know what you're looking for if you open it up with a hex editor, and I'm not sure what you would even do to have the game clear out a fleet during turn processing.
It sounds similar to this, in which case unfortunately you'll need to start a new game. 
Ok, thanks for the replies-this is so annoying, Im into a game that's been going for ages. Invincible enemy fleets don't make for a very fair game! Gah!
