Finally won a DA game

I was the humans playing on a gigantic map.  Number of stars and planets was set at common.  Seven opponents.  The war against the Yor Collective was fun.  They had taken over 2 other civilizations before they turned there eyes on me.  They took a couple planets from me before I was able to deploy to meet the threat.  So after grinding them down & taking them out I had the resources of 4 civilizations to throw against the remaining 3.  From there is was just a matter of attrition.

I think that for my next game I'm going to keep the gigantic map but set stars & planets to rare.  Having to manage so many ships & planets got a bit monotonous.

Congrats on the win! Sounds like you need to up the ante and play on a higher difficulty. :D

Managing gigantic empires can indeed bog down in micromanage. Once my empire starts to grow past a few dozen planets, I give up on micromanaging planet contruction and instead fill up all the tiles with the queue as soon as I get the planets. That way I can just skim the report looking for planets whose queues are empty. Somewhat less efficient, but it´s a bit more fun. ;)

Well done!

:-)

What difficulty level?

Note that strategies change with big changes to settings!

The difficulty level was tough.

For the next one I tried the Iconians on a gigantic map with stars & planets set to rare.  Level crippling with 3 AI.  I'm not sure I'll finish this one.  With so few planets I was only able to grab 3.  With only 3 planets research is painfully slow (Even though I had set the research speed up to max).  I don't understand how the AI is running around with large ships with 100+ firepower where the best I can field is mediums with a firepower of something like 6.  They blew me away research-wise.  I don't understand how their research is so much higher than mine when we have the same amount of planets.  I had dedicated the little secondary planet next to the capitol to be my research HQ and rushed terraforming.   It turned out to be a PQ-19 planet by the time it was all improved but I think I'm already too far behind to catch up.

You're never too far behind to catch up. Get them to declare war on eachother and be ready to invade whoever is losing for a free tech, territorial expansion and having common enemies with the winning party. You can severely limit the winnings party's gains by invading after he clears orbiting defenders but before his own transports lands. being smart can offset impressive power differences.

On Cripling, the AI doesn't get very significant bonusses if I recall correctly (it is the setting after Tough, right?), but it does get some. More likely it is trading amongst eachother and/or generally just being more effective at getting weapon tech than you are. Try to diplomacy your way into some decent weaponry,

It's the second one after Tough. The bonuses are only about +25%, if I'm not mistaken.

Not very significant indeed. Thefirst tier only gets +10%, right?

Anyhow, +25% shouldn't be the only thing explaning such a devastating lead. :)

I just don't get it.  I'm only playing (DA) on Tough level and I just can't seem to keep up.  The AI seems to swarm me with ships that I cannot hope to match.  I wish I could post a few saved games here.

I have read the tips here and I don't think I'm all that dim but how can I counter fleets with ten times my attack factor?

I really like this game but I'm about to just give up.

Before you give up, could you answer a few questions?

1) Keep track of the number of turns so that you can tell us here how long it is before you get to this point.

2) What are your start settings, in terms of race picks and political.

3) What are the positions of your sliders for spending, etc?

4) What are your first several moves?

5) What are the first 5 or 10 things you research?

6) What are the first 5 things you build?

7) What are the values for your research, production, and shipbuilding outputs during a few turns?

8) Do you ever use "focus"?

That's cool Jim.  I'll take all the help I can get.  I'll start up a new game tomorrow and will record the stats you inquire about.

On a separate note, I went and saw Ender's Game yesterday.   My date had to back out at the last minute (no worries...Long term girl friend.  It happens) so I resorted to taking my 60 year old mother with me to see it.   I thought it was a great flick.  It was closer to the book than I was expecting it to be.   Mom liked it too  :jafo:

Anyhow...I'll try to be back tomorrow with a complete chapter of this (cheating) game.
