How Complex is GalCivII and Expansions?

Hey all,

I'm new to the forums and am a little late to the party. I've never played any space related games except your typical RPG and FPS. I just got through the Mass Effect series and have a hankerin' for some space faring goodness.

I've done my research. I definitely want the Sins of A Solar Empire Rebellion game and will get it when on sale again. The question I have is more around this turn-based 4x game. I've never played a 4x game and I've narrowed my choices down to Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition via Steam or Endless Space.

I've read plenty of reviews on both and have watched a ton of Youtube videos. I've got to be honest, I'm leaning towards Endless Space because it looks easier to get into, and looks a lot sleeker. However, GalCivII got awesome reviews. My only concern here is I don't want to be turned off by the complexity. I'd like to get into the game relatively easily without spending the next year learning how to play it. What I like the about Endless Space, is that it's more macro-management rather than micro-management, but I'm willing t overlook that given the praise this was given. And honestly, 20 bucks isn't a lot these days.

Any feedback would be welcome. Oh, and I should say that I think I have adult attention deficit disorder or something. If my eyes glaze over when looking at something (like a math equation), I'll move on almost immediately. :)

So, if any of you have any advice that could push me in making the right purchase, I'd appreciate it. I'm completely new into this realm of gaming. Thanks!

I don't think GC2/3 has a steep learning curve. From your post, I'm guessing the biggest issue will be RTS vs. TBS.

If you're a RTSer, than TBS games like GC2 may be too slow for you.

No my biggest issue is not RTS vs. TBS. As mentioned, I'm getting Rebellion which will cover the RTS side of things. I'm actually looking for a TBS space game as well. FTR, I do play the Civilization series and played Alpha Centauri years ago.

It's more of a mood thing... If I'm multi-tasking, I like to play a nice TBS game where I can take my time. :)

If you play Civ, you should have no problem adapting to GalCiv.  You will spend a while getting details down, but the basic concepts are there and recognizable.  I found GalCiv an easy transition.

Isn't Endless Universe just designed for outside N. America?
