Gem from the GCIII FAQ

https://www.galciv3.com/game/faq

Q: Will the game require a network connection to play?

A: No. However, some of the AI learning mechanisms will require access to the Metaverse in order to perform analysis on player strategies. This will be optional and able to be disabled by the player but does require an Internet connection.

A big +1 for - I assume - Brad, who will someday wake up to find GCIV entirely written by the AI.

This sounds like what Gratuitous Space Battles does for its campaign game.

Crap ... apparently not multiplayer?  Or I may be reading too much into that.  I guess if an internet connection is not required it could just mean yes you can play the game single player without an internet connection?

So long as it's optional, I am happy, I find the recent trend of 'always online' a terrible idea, both for people that travel, and those of us who's internet is not that stable.

Sounds like a neural network, which is pretty awesome! I'm perfectly fine with always online for a purpose like this, provided it automatically reconnects after disconnects, doesn't mind lag, and only sends minimal data.

And becoming Skynet!

I'm not sure how far we can really 'crowdsource' AI behavior but here's an interesting thought

The Forza team for the Xbox One is testing their new game. Currently when you play, your play data is sent to Forza for analysis. From which tehy are crowdsourcing AI parameters for how other drivers should behave.

If we assume GalCiv3 is doing soemthing similar, how much data would you be willing to part with? Being online? Uploads of your game every 30/20/10 turns?

Weren't they already doing that?

We started discussing that on the old GalCiv2 forums.  The idea sounds familiar to some of us.  Hopefully, this one will be like Publius of NV mentioned above.  Bring on the singularity!

This sounds like an exciting development.  In efforts like this we explore both gaming and AI.  Now I can justify all this play time.

I caught that same gem while reading the FAQ and forwarded it to a few friends.  Stardock's AI has always been scary-good over the years, and I know it's Brad's baby...if he has made a learning computer fueled by crowd-sourcing, I'm a little frightened.

Ahhh. Damn. I have memories of gabbin' that up back in the day. I had thought it was already happening. And, as a result, I assumed everyone else must have been pretty stupid 'cause I kept mauling the AI. ;)
