1v1 Medium Random Map, TEC Rebel OP?

I played maybe 20 games of multiplayer sins in the past 5ish years, and I don't think any of those was less than a year ago (except for a few casual compstomps, and even those were 6ish months ago).  Then, yesterday, after a few practice matches against the ai, I went online and won 2 out of 2 1v1 matches on med random maps. Each one was against a player with 300+ games under his or her belt. Neither game was even close. The catch? I was using TEC rebels and rushing Truce Amongst Rogues. (If I recall correctly, I think that both of the other 2 players were playing Advent if that is relevant to my question).

I love these 1v1 games on a relatively larger map, and do not want to stop playing them.

So my question is this: Are TEC rebs massively overpowered in this type of game? Or do I just catch on quickly?

If the former, I will just ban TEC rebs from this kind of game when I host/play it in the future. If the latter, yay me :) Before attacking me for noobish bragging, please note that I'm not trying to brag: I just wanted to ask this question before going back and wasting both my own and other people's time playing games in which I was at a massive and unfair advantage. (Believe me, I'd much rather be playing than wasting time bragging to players that could probably all crush me without effort).  Thank you in advance for your input and time!

TLDR: read the bold and underlined parts

Edit/related question: If the answer is "no, they are not OP, you just catch on quick" then my follow up question is this: at what point in map size (if any) do TEC Rebs become OP for 1v1's? Large random? Huge random? etc...

TEC Rebels if you give them room to do this hyper-expansion with TAR, I can see it becoming pretty ridiculous coupled with TEC early rush advantages you can turn the Advent inside out before they can get the ball rolling.

I wouldn't call it OP though.

I don't mean OP in general. Only with regard to this specific kind of game. In other words, should I stop playing it myself and ban it when I'm hosting these 1v1's on larger maps?

The Medium Random map does tend to favor TaR strongly, but I've lost while trying it before. In particular, TaR rush can make you vulnerable to your standard military rush since you'll be focusing on civic labs at first. Worse, for a brief period after you get TaR online, you'll be very hard pressed to pay for all the planet upgrades you need to make money of your big Empire. In this period you will be very vulnerable to an all out assault on your homeworld, as you'll be forced to choose between building ships or negative income from your expansion (or hauling further expansion).

Also many MP players may not be used to 1v1 matches, and personally I think Random Tiny map is the best for such games. Small tends to generate very unbalanced maps while medium is a bit better but is probably a bit too large.
