Is there a better way for generating mana?

Magnar race. Slaves. Flesh Bound Tome. Cull the Weak.

Train a bunch of super cheap slaves, stack them with a Sov/Champ, attack the weakest lair you can find, then Cull, Cull, Cull. Kill the monster(s), pocket the extra mana, cycle, rinse, repeat at another lair. Getting lots of mana very early in the game is extremely beneficial.

Is there a better way of generating mana other than eating the Shards via the Consume spell?

Conclaves are pretty good at generating mana

You can also cull skeletons from summon skeleton/summon skeletal horde.  Much quicker mana expansion, though you do need to bootstrap it by getting your sov up a few levels.  You can combine the approaches, of course.  Take a familiar, and you'll have 2 capable casters quicker.

Familiar used to cast Cull the Weak, this is brilliant! An actual use for a familiar.

All the heroes can cast Cull the Weak if you're playing a faction with that trait so that's not it.  The kicker is when you use the Familiar to cast a second Skeletel Horde from which to Cull the Weak.

I don't use summons. I use slaves, lots of slaves.

Well you asked for a better way to generate mana... Cast Skeletal Horde, then Cull them is a better way than slaves.

But in that case, why would it matter who is summoning and who is culling? The sov can summon while the familiar is culling and vice versa. Or am I not understanding this right?

Both would Summon Skeletal Horde, then both would Cull the 18 units created by the spell.  18 units x 20 mana = 360 mana (-90 to cast 2 x Skeletal Summon Horde) = potentially +270 mana every battle.  You could also Summon Skeleton (0 mana cost) then Cull them for +40 more mana.

Even if you had a retinue of 8 slave armies, the most you could get from one battle would be 8 x 20 = 160 mana.  Does that all make sense?

By the way, I'm planning on doing Magnar for our next Game-of-the-Month to start in few days from now.  You should play!

Yup, that makes perfect sense. Thanks!
