Adware and Toolbar Uninstaller: Crap Killer

Adware and Toolbar Uninstaller: Crap Killer

Even using the best practices, you can get hit with adware and toolbars (wait one while I duck out to Listerine my fingers).

The usual source? Deceptive installers and deceptive download portals. They’ll get you every time. They’ll switch home pages and search engines. They really come pretty close to malware, imo.

Anyway, you might get asked to help someone with multiple toolbars and adware crap on his box.

There are good programs for that: Adware Cleaner, PC Decrapifier and Toolbar Cleaner are good examples.

The program's batch file will search all installed software programs for strings such as "toolbar", "coupon" or "registry". All programs that match these strings are displayed afterwards in the program interface, and uninstalled one by one by the program. Its search parameters are loose…so it’ll choose both good and bad items. You make the choices of what to keep and what to remove. That’s a good thing since it will not tell you what’s good or bad.

If you wish to edit the batch file, you can tighten up the ‘false positives’.

Also, the latest version displays a list of all software that matches its search queries and a prompt that asks you whether you want to continue with the uninstallation of all programs. If you select yes, the program commences and will remove ALL the listed programs.. If you select no, you are asked to confirm the removal of each application individually. I’d suggest going with that option, if I were you.

The software is tiny: 7K.

I kept having my homepage changed to bikinibabes.com. I finally just gave up and enjoyed it.

Half yer luck... ask.com is nowhere near as entertaining, and quadruply less inviting.

Any site that promises to parade puppies in all their glory [and delivers] is an absolute must... where do I sign up? :w00t: :P

Seriously, though, it's not in the least bit funny when you download and install something you've trusted over the years to be inundated with malware/crapware that was not clearly illustrated as being a part of the downloaded bundle.  All too often additional software is not clearly represented as being a part of the download and is frequently missed during the installation process.  That is what the purveyors of this crap hope, that you do not notice the tripe they're peddling and unwittingly install it on your system... so yeah, people, be very, very aware.  Prevention is better than cure.

Yeah, Malware etc.................Grrr

It's Fu**n everywhere nowadays, not to mention all theese Pre-Checked checkboxes placed in the most crazy places so you will miss to Un-Check them just to get some f'n "toolbar" (mark the quote) & S H I T in your otherwise prestine setup/system....

REVOLT people ! (I have NO idea how though)  ^_^

-Also when you get it ( I say "when" as it is BOUND to happen sooner or later) it's NOT sure that either Malwarebytes nor Spyhunter or similar will be able to find it or fix/take it away.... I have had to re install Windows Many times !

Since the thread was revived by a ******, I thought it opportune to remind everyone that toolbars, browsers and browser hijackers can come with your favourite software titles... depending on where you download them.

I have downloaded Any Video Converter a number of times without issue, but just yesterday I noticed it came bundled with toolbars, Google Chrome and/or options to change my current home page to ask.com.  In fact, I was very lucky to have noticed it because the text was considerably smaller than all the rest and could easily have been missed/overlooked as license fineprint.

So people, please be extra vigilant as this practice is becoming more and more commonplace across freeware sites, not to mention well disguised or obscure when installing the desired program.

When installing downloaded software, always choose "Advanced" or "Custom" installation. That way any wrapped software has to reveal anything else with it. Pay close attention to what is written as it is sometimes clear, but other times it is couched in negative wording requiring you to choose "no" if you don't want to install the crap that comes with the software.
