MMO aspect

Is there interest?

I don't know about the rest of you but I would be very interested in an MMO version of Star Control.

Players owning starbases/planets that can be upgraded

Team combat

Base/planet assaults

Crafting modules, weapons, ships

Exploring

Resource gathering

and so on

Am I the only one in this?

I'm sure you are not the only one, but I registered at this forum just to say no to your proposal.

I believe that is technically known as being a dick.

Why in the world would that be? Star Control is one of my favorite game series of all time. Star Control 2 is easily one of my top 5 games of all times. I'm very happy about this reboot of the series, and I don't want to see a Star Control MMO. How is it being a dick to voice my opinion on a question directly asked?

I said so.

Because creating an MMO Star Control would take development away from a single player Star Control and I would rather play a Single Player SC

Are you actually taking me seriously?

If anything, I could see 2 factions, a SC1 style persistent map, where each side could make territory gains. Played out as strategy or melee matches.

I mirror Captain's sentiment though, that I wouldn't want resources taken away from an amazing single player experience.

Honestly, I think that Star Control really needs to have good multiplayer.  I started loving the series with Star Control 1, and played countless matches against my family.  I honestly tended to play Melee well ahead of the missions... but I enjoyed both.

I could see both a turn-based strategy playing out... or a long term strategy.  But I don't want to see anything quite as involved as a real MMO.  I would prefer something more similar to, say, StarCraft or BlazBlue's match and ranking system.  People could meet random opponents, form guilds, establish friends... but it would be matchmaking at its core, not a persistent, overarching world.

We actually did something similar to this back in the day in a game called Stellar Frontier. It was a quasi-MMO where players could add "solar systems" to a virtual galaxy and each player controlled a single ship against other ships with their own powers. It was heavily Star Control influenced.

That said, we are looking at Star Control as something that we'll be evolving over the next decade. If you're already here, you know what I mean. The technology is here where we can really do an amazing action/RPG/open galaxy adventure game.

After we do that, who knows what will be possible. We've all seen how Mass Effect and Oblivion/Skyrim have become huge successes in their genres. A space adventure game with the spirit of a Star Control 2 (matched with modern tech/budget) will be amazing.

Make no mistake I think we eventually need a proper sequel to Star Control 2 as an adventure/RPG/strategy game with a massive universe to explore. That being said I think a good idea to get the "Star Control" brand out there would be a "new" Star Control 1 which basically sets up Battlefield style matches between fleets of ships on the Star Control hyperspace map during the war between the Alliance of Free Stars and the Ur-Quan Hierarchy. Taking solar systems would allow for spawning, multiple ships could engage in melee at the same time but all human controlled, players could collect points by mining or salvaging ships which could then be used to build colonies and defence stations (and spawn points). Players could choose to respawn earlier with small craft (Shofixi scouts for instance) or either wait to save up for larger ships or spend their individual points. Players could cooperate to take key solar systems like Sol which in turn would run down the opponents score faster and/or allow them to use said ship designs; eventually the team with zero points at the end loses. This game with a 2D map and basic melee combat, solar systems per Star Control 2 map could probably be done quickly with the majority of the programming being the multiplayer and MMO aspects. Could be made free to play over the internet to attract people to the Star Control site / advertising / bring in new players into the Star Control universe (maybe even internet based that Ipad, PC users, etc can play against each other). This would then buy time for the development of a "true Star Control 3" involving Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III or maybe even a Star Control II remake prior to releasing Star Control 3. I assume it would be in the spirit of Star Control 2 as a action/RPG/open galaxy/strategy game that would probably involve a great deal of universe development, planets, work out how the new melee will work, map the entire Star Control 2 galaxy, etc.

Oh I'm all for getting the game up to date first, followed by a new single player game.

But after that... I just feel the universe and game mechanics would work great combined with an MMO setting. Gather resources and technology, use those to build your base and build or upgrade a fleet, then use your fleets to invade/defend/scout/do missions/hunt/smuggle/trade/explore and so on.

I think a SC1 type of game could be a MMO of some sort.  I would love to join an Alliance of Free Stars fleet and help battle for supremacy of a star cluster.  But I think it's probably a project to consider after a single-player adventure game, because SC2 is what everyone seems to miss the most.

Please don't make it an MMO!

Like someone else said we need a true sequel for star control 2.

Don't know what kinda MMO you would want it to be but problems with MMO are:

*You have to rely on others a lot

*So much grinding make jack a dull boy

*Have poor story and story telling

*Other people ruin your experience

*MMO most often have terrible communities

*You never ever feel immersed in the game

*Lack of the little things that make a good solo experience

*You never feel like the hero you most often are told to be in MMO

*People are bored with MMO's already, you can see many of them fail while solo indie games are rising

*Only way this could be a good MMO if it were like star citizen ( I don't mean the 3D and the graphical stuff ) but then this would not be star control if you want to make a game like that make it something else and let star control be star control

I have been a star control fan since the first one came out on sega megadrive, then later I got the second one for pc and it was nothing I had ever seen before. Truly changed everything. Still playing Urquan master either the story again or melee.

I would really love to see this game finished, I like star control a lot and stardock makes me few of my favorite games like FE, GC series and SOSE.

Just make sure the creatures aren't ugly and are well animated, as graphics have never sadly been stardocks strong points. They don't need to have awesome graphics nope nope nope but just make sure the feel real like in star control 2. At least no puppets! please no puppets like in starcontrol 3 =D

 No PUPPETS!

 NO PUPPETS!

I think a new Star Control should feature multiplayer 1 on 1 battles like the old melee mode of SC2. I also think that they should let you play melee duels over the internet (it'd be easy enough to add).

I would be very wary of making it multi-person duels to begin with at least. I think the new ships need to be carefully balanced so that each ship has its merits the way the old ships did. With the old ships, it was entirely possible to take out an Ur-Quan with an Arilou, and plausible to take out a Chmmr with a Supox. I would like to make sure the ships can compete with each other effectively first BEFORE introducing the idea of more than 2 ship duels. Otherwise it makes it far too easy to leave the ships unbalanced and rely on the combination of ships to create balance. DOTA2 takes the approach of every character being unbalanced to create balance… While it works for DOTA2, 1 on 1 battles should be balanced in SC2.

As for changing this game drastically in general (MMO or otherwise).. I'd say, look at the XCom relaunch. IMO, that's been the best relaunch of an old series. I particularly lied how they did a 2-pronged approach with X-Com:Enemy Unknown and The Bureau: XCom Declassified.

X-Com: Enemy Unknown stayed quite true to the original X-Com feel of play. And it was great!

The Bureau changed the game mechanics and provided more of a "main character" plot line. It was quite good too, even though it deviated significantly from the play style and feel of the originals.

If they'd done The Bureau first, or without X-Com: Enemy Unknown at all, I'd have been very unhappy with that reboot. But since they did both, it allowed me to get the feel of the originals from X-Com:Enemy Unknown first, and then I was much more open minded about giving The Bureau a fair chance. I ended up enjoying both, but for very different reasons. I consider them completely different games, but I'd play both.
