Weapons for a mage.

My sovereign is a mage.  She casts spells.  Lots of spells.  She can't use plate or chain mail even if I wanted her to.  I can't see a reason to use anything other than a training sword for the experience bonus.  Is there any reason to use another weapon?

I make a custom sovereign and use that scepter with the damage bonus.

Their are a couple of staffs you can find

Caster staff : 6 attack, -1 crit chance, +10 spell mastery, ranged attack.

Haunter's staff : 6 attack, -1 crit chance, +10% spell damage, ranged attack.

Having ranged attack they will get your caster placed at the back in tactical combat and have a bonus for spell casting.

I always pick the weapon with the highest initiative bonus, +3 or +4. Much more useful than 10% spell damage. You have to be prepared to start in the front row, but since you act first, that shouldn't be a problem.

Exactly this. Acting first and often is very important. I tend to use a sword or dagger with high initiative bonus and advance up the mage tree until I get to "-1 to casting times" in parallel with one spell book.

Spellstaff: adds to spell mastery and spell damage. Mage's best friend. Initiative bonuses are huge, but I'd give them up for the spellstaff.

If you are Umber or can get to Umber's shops, the skath claw is +4 initiative.
