[Mod]Star Wars: Interregnum [Beta 2.5 Release, 12-20-23]

A new Star Wars experience built on the Enhanced 4X Mod

Intro

Star Wars: Interregnum is an upcoming mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion that builds off of the highly successful Enhanced 4X Mod. Fleeing the unknown terror that is chasing the Vasari, the factions of Sins of a Solar Empire stumble on a temporary wormhole that takes them to a galaxy far, far away. The sudden arrival of armadas with trillions of refugees and thousands of warships between the events of Episodes 5 & 6 forever alters the Star Wars universe and plunges the galaxy into an unprecedented period of chaos and violence.

Features
4 new factions: Interregnum will feature 2 new races each with 2 subfactions like vanilla Sins races...

  • The Galactic Empire is the remains of Palpatine's Empire now headed by Darth Vader, and enjoys a powerful industrial base and perhaps the most powerful fleet of all factions. However Vader's poor political skills and the feeling that the Empire is being crushed from all sides has left the Empire with extremely poor morale, and further defeats may start damaging the Empire's war effort.
  • The Imperial Warlords are an umbrella faction that represents the various Empire factions that have operational independence, whether they've gone Rogue to serve their own agenda or are acting under orders in special circumstances. While lacking the legitimacy and infrastructure of the Galactic Empire, this has forced the warlords to use their forces more wisely than the sometimes brutish Imperial war machine. And the Emperor's fondness for conducting research in remote locations, along with Vader lack of interest in major R&D projects has allowed the Warlords to get access to many powerful technologies that might more than make up for their shortcomings. The player will also be able to choose to ally with one of the Major warlords for additional bonuses, mainly Grand Admiral Thrawn, Grand Moff Ardus Kaine, Warlord Zsinj, and Director Yasanne Isard.
  • The Rebel Alliance is the original military branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and continues to fight the Empire much as it did in the Galactic Civil war. Preferring hit and run attacks and strikecraft superiority along with some innovative and dirty tricks, the Rebels are one of the most unique factions and are extremely difficult to stamp out.
  • The New Republic was created by Rebel sympathizing planets after the Empire was forced to abandoned the Outer Rim following the emergence of the Sins races. Fearing that the Rebels would not be strong enough to protect them if the Empire tried to conquer them again, the New Republic has decided to create its own conventional armed forces from scratch. While this focus on new institutions leaves the New Republic vulnerable and disinclined to attack early on, once it gets going its powerful new warship designs along with its substantial economic and cultural strengths make the New Republic an extremely competent and well rounded faction with few weaknesses.

Superior Gameplay: As a successor mod to the Enhanced 4X Mod, Interregnum will support all the gameplay enhancements found in that mod, including...

  • Hero Units: Both Sins and Star Wars factions can call in their most powerful champions to turn the tide of battle.
  • New Planets and Random Encounters: Truly Explore the Galaxy far, far away with an expanded array of planet types, some of which will be populated with everything from Rogue Imperial Moffs to abandoned Republic era fleets to Mandalorian raiders.
  • Improved Civics, Economy, Diplomacy and Espionage: Don't feel like just blasting your opponent? The Enhanced 4X substantially fleshes out the noncombat side of Gameplay with things like improved culture, embassies and spying.
  • Customization: From adding upgrades to your favorite capitalships and titan to a library of minimods to customize your gameplay experience,
  • Upgrades to existing factions: Players totally new to the Enhanced 4X series of mods will find the familiar Vanilla races they know have all gotten an upgraded. All factions of received new techs, faction and racial bonuses, new starting units and other alterations that encourages more diverse gameplay.

Story

Progress

With the third alpha release, the Rebel Alliance has been added, meaning this mod can now be used to relive the Galactic Civil War as well as the current war with the Sins factions. The militia and pirates have also been replaced with Star Wars versions; now the vast majority of material on the game map is clearly from a galaxy far, far away.

I think that even if the planet does surrender I will keep bombing them until there is nothing left but a broken memory.

You see this is how it starts.  A seemingly normal non-violent person is given a massive ship and proceeds to wreak havoc on the innocent children of the stars.

Captain: "Sir, we've reduced the enemy colony to ashes."

Red Dwarf: "So why did you stop Captain? I ordered it to be blasted into dust..."

Holy crap looking forward to this!

Yeah I never post but, this was just too exciting.  Really looking forward to this GoaFan77.   I love E4X and just about anything based in the original Star Wars Trilogy.  This is going to be the bomb.

Yup. The Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance factions will basically try the represent the feel of the original trilogy, while the Imperial Warlords and the New Republic will obviously borrow a lot more from the Expanded Universe. Hopefully there should be enough for everyone to be happy (well except the Clone Wars people, but I can't really come up with a plot that includes them. This one is crazy enough as it is;) ).

I can't wait either. this sounds extremely brilliant :)

Kaine and the PA used some Clone Wars era ships and units, could give them some. Note: Not being entirely serious here.

I was reading this "Night Hammer class Star Dreadnaught" and it was the original name from the starship but it was renamed to KnigthHammer. At least if it is the same SSD from Darksaber book.

I might do that, Kaine is one of the main warlords the player can choose to ally with in the Imperial Warlords faction. And at the least some of the most icon ships like the Venator will show up in other places, and will be obtainable by anyone via certain map events.

It is, but like many things and characters in Interregnum the Night Hammer has a rather different history, and thus it doesn't get renamed this time around (and personally I thought Knighthammer was a terrible pun  ;) ).

Ideally, Night Hammer will be the titan of the Imperial Warlords faction if the player joins with Grand Admiral Thrawn (one of the bigger artistic liberties I took, but he already had stealth technology from Wayland and would value its tactical advantage much more than the other Warlords, who regardless already have their own Executor class ships). However, at first it will probably be the titan for the entire Warlords faction regardless of who you join, as I'd rather focus on getting the Rebels and New Republic done before adding the Lusankya, Reaper and Iron Fist for their respective warlords.

Good, though real life and the new DLC has pushed back the beta release date. Progress updates should resume in a week or so.

Hard to say for sure. I wanted to have the Empire Beta done by New Years but the Stellar Phenomenon DLC of course prevented that from happening. Progress has been good lately though, if this can keep up (and it probably won't) I should have an ETA by the end of January.

In the meantime, I've been posting plenty of new screenshots to Moddb, including...

Skipray Blastboat

Lancer Frigates

Another Victory-I

Strike Cruiser

GoaFan77 you continue to amaze and inspire; your mod work is pretty good too.

Wishing you a healthy and happy future.

backs out of the room slowly...   *_* :borg:

PS:

Princess Leia: No! Alderaan is peaceful! We have no weapons, you can't possibly...

Governor Tarkin: [impatiently] You would prefer another target, a military target? Then name the system! I grow tired of asking this so it will be the last time: *Where* is the rebel base?

Princess Leia: ...Dantooine. They're on Dantooine.

Governor Tarkin: There. You see, Lord Vader, she can be reasonable. Continue with the operation; you may fire when ready.

Princess Leia: WHAT?

Governor Tarkin: You're far too trusting. Dantooine is too remote to make an effective demonstration - but don't worry; we will deal with your rebel friends soon enough.

You mean something about me besides my mod work inspires you?  I wonder what that is.;)

In the meantime, have some screenshots. This time of the Gladiator Star Destroyer, which looks much prettier (well, for a grey Imperial Warship) after a texture touchup.

Here's the first part of the timeline of Interregnum, that outline the events that occurred prior to the player taking control in the mod.

The Story of Interregnum starts in the universe of Sins of a Solar Empire, where a last ditch attempt to escape the unknown pursuers of the Vasari leads to the Sins races stumbling into the Star Wars galaxy.

2 years after the events of Rebellion (Enhanced 4X Mod era)

The years of conflict have made the political divisions between Loyalists and Rebels permanent,  as the Rebel factions have broken off to form their own sovereign states. The TEC Rebels have formed a new nation called the Human Trader State (HTS), while the Loyalist continue to operate under the Trader Emergency Coalition (TEC). Believers still loyal to the original teachings of the Unity call themselves the Orthodox Advent, while the Rebel reformists have formed a new unity and refer to themselves as the Ascended Advent. The pro-peace Vasari outcasts have organized themselves into a new Vasari Independent Republic, while the loyalists continue to obey the orders of the authoritarian Vasari Central Command.

3 years after Rebellion

The Arcova Scout Frigate Pathfinder-38 finds a new wormhole on the fringes of TEC space. On traveling through it, its navigation equipment is unable to find any recognizable astronomical objects. After making star charts for the area, including a nearby Galaxy only a few light years away, it passes back through the wormhole and sends its data back to the TEC capital, where it is archived.

5 years after Rebellion

After a long period of ceasefire, diplomats from the Vasari Independent Republic successfully negotiate the Triple Alliance between the TEC, Ascended Advent and the VIR. However, celebration is brief due to the growing threat of the Vasari's unknown assailants, which are expected to arrive in Trader space in another 5 years. The Alliance and other factions begin evacuation preparations.

6 years after Rebellion

A Vasari Republic astronomer, Dr. Sularatak, begins reviewing the unknown star charts in the TEC archive, to see if the Vasari have encountered any of the stars during their long migration. Only Pathfinder-38's discovery was not in the Vasari records. That same year, Sularatak writes an academic paper suggesting the Triple Alliance could use the wormhole as a springboard for its evacuation, as it would be much easier than traveling through interstellar space to the next galaxy. He receives a grant for further study of the wormhole, now dubbed P-38c.

7 years after Rebellion

Dr. Sularatak's study produces an unexpected finding. Not only does the wormhole lead to an entirely unknown section of space, but the wormhole itself is unstable. He calculates that it will collapse on itself sometime in the next few years, before the unknown pursuers can arrive at it. The importance of his findings are immediately realized in the VIR, and after much debate they persuade the TEC and Ascended Advent that wormhole P-38c provides the best chance of escaping the unknown assailants for good.

Despite the most secret security precautions, word about this plan eventually gets out to the other factions, and after an intense campaign to seize control of P-38c, a truce is eventually negotiated by all parties. The Triple Alliance will be the first to go through P-38c, after that the HTS, Orthodox Advent and VCC evacuation fleets will be allowed to go through unopposed. Once they've arrived in the new galaxy, fighting can resume without the specter of sudden mutual annihilation.

9 years after Rebellion

The truce allows all factions to complete their evacuation armadas on time. At the beginning of the year the Triple Alliance sends millions of ships and trillions of refugees through P-38c. A few months later the HTS, Orthodox Advent and finally the Vasari Central Command also send their forces through the wormhole, each headed for a different sector of the nearby galaxy. Only a few pirates, the populations of the most remote worlds, and  some stubborn Traders who believe the whole thing to be a Vasari hoax stayed in Trader space.

A Vorastra titan commanded by a member of the Vasari Central Command was the last ship to pass through P-38c. His ancestor had order the great evacuation millennia ago. The thought that they had finally escaped the unknown terror he had fled from all those years ago was an unreal feeling for him. "Whatever we find in this mess of a galaxy we're travelling to" he thought, "it cannot compare to the great evil we have finally escaped from."

10 years after Rebellion

From the bridge of the Jikara Navigator, Dr. Sularatak watched as the other side of P-38c collapsed, shrank and finally faded out of existence, just a few weeks off from his estimated date. As a scientist, Sularatak was somewhat disappointed that they would now never be able to learn a single thing about the threat that had chased his people for so long. But there was a new war to be worried about, and a new galaxy that the astronomer needed to study. "We're done here, Captain", Sularatak mumbled as he began to leave the bridge, immersed in thought. He barely heard the Captain tell his crew "Very well. Set a course for the planet the locals call... Eriadu. The fleet is gathering there, in a battle apparently just as bad as the old days." No one on the Navigator could have imagined that it would actually be worse.

To be continued...

The Immobolizer-418 Cruiser, usually just called an Interdictor Cruiser.

The Imperial Star Destroyer's entry has been added to the manual. You can find it on Moddb or the second post of this thread!

Excited! :-D Are you leaving gravity wells the same size as they currently are or will you be increasing them to manage the larger ships of the empire?

The gravity wells will stay the same size. Only the Super Star Destroyers are really a problem with the scaling. I've decided to cap their size to no more than say 2.5 times the length of a Ragnarov. If it turns out that that is too small compared to other Star Wars ships, I'll just say Interregnum uses the old length of 12.8km for a Super Star Destroyer instead of 19km.

Or say the Super-class is not so fictional and got forced into reality as a budget SSD to combat the invaders. ;)

Progress

While the mod is not currently ready for release, it is most certainly being worked on. The first public beta is planned to be out by the end of the year if not sooner, with a mostly feature complete Empire race at least available. More details will be announced in this thread.

I guess if needed to reduce it even further to 8km that would be an option. Though since the Executor and Lusankya are explicitly mentioned in the lore and the game, I would have to unretcon the retcon that made the Executor class its own class and put them back as Super Class Star Destroyers.

Well not the beta, but it looks like I may have an invite only alpha once most of the gameplay elements for the Empire are in. Which should be soon.

Current Status of the Empire

Ships and Structures - 85%

  • HUD Icons - 100%
  • Stats and functionality - 85%
  • Voice overs - 20%
  • Pictures and miscellaneous Icons - 0%

HUD - 95%

Abilities - 90%

Research - 25%

Basically once the ships and structures and research tree is near complete I'll start the initial alpha for balance and general feedback.
