Intro:

Negative Abilities adds options to get negative ability-scores in exchange for more Customization Points at the start of the game. This allows for more interesting possibilities in creating your race.

If you want, you can also change the amount of Customization Points you start with. This is done via RaceConfig.xml. I provided ones for Dark Avatar, Twilight of the Arnor, and my other mod, Autumn Twilight. There are four variations: Standard provides 10 Customization Points for all races, Medium provides 8, Hard provides 5, and Impossible 0 (for custom races, it's 15, 13, 10, and 5).

You can download Negative Abilities here.

I hope you have fun with this mod!

How to install the mod:

For Dark Avatar and Twilight of the Arnor:

1. Download and unzip the mod, then place the Negative Abilities folder into GalCiv 2's mod-folder. If you are using the standard installation path, this should be:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock Games\Galactic Civilizations II – Ultimate Edition\Mods

If you installed the game into a different location, or are using the Steam-version of the game, use that path instead.

2. Optional: Go to the 'Negative Abilities\TotA' folder (or 'Negative Abilities\DA', if you are playing Dark Avatar), and copy the RaceConfig.xml from either the 'Standard', 'Medium', 'Hard', or 'Impossible' sub-folder into the 'Negative Abilities\Data' folder.

3. Start the game and go the Options-menu. On the 'Game' tab, activate the 'Use Mods' option and change the 'Current Mods Directory' so it points to Negative Abilities.

4. Restart the game, so the changes take effect.

For Autumn Twilight:

1. Download and unzip the mod.

2. Copy the AbilityBonuses.xml from 'Negative Abilities\Data' into the 'Autumn Twilight\Data' folder. When asked to overwrite the file, click 'Yes'.

3. Optional: If you want a harder game, copy the RaceConfig.xml from either 'Negative Abilities\AT\Medium', 'Negative Abilities\AT\Hard', or 'Negative Abilities\AT\Impossible' into the 'Autumn Twilight\Data' folder. When asked to overwrite the file, click 'Yes'. (The file under 'Standard' is the same one as in AT. You can use it, if you want to go back to the original values.)

I don't know that race. Where is it from, and what exactly doesn't work with it?

If you have installed it correctly, you should see several new options for each ability. They have a plus sign in front and a minus sign right behind that. That's an issue with the UI. The minus sign may also be a little hard to see. If you select one of those abilities, you should see the minus sign correctly in the race abilities section to the right.

In any case, I'm releasing an update to this mod soon. Either later today, or tomorrow. In the meantime, I'd like to know, if there is any demand to make this mod compatible with DL too.

Hi everybody! I released a small update to this mod.

What is new? Well, I fixed the description of the negative choices for the Economics ability. I somehow missed that, when I released the mod. In addition to this, I also changed the cost of some of the negative choices to be identical with their positive counterparts.

The biggest part are some changes to the Morale and Trade Route choices. I wasn't really happy with how they were.

The cost for the second and third choice of the Morale ability was quite high, compared to the bonus (+5% per point). I didn't want to increase the bonuses too much, because Morale bonuses are already quite prevalent in the game. So, I decided to do the following:

- Natural Happy will now provide +20% instead of +15%

- Natural Joyous will now provide +30% instead of +20%, but the cost is now 4 instead of 3

This means, that you can get the same bonus as before, but for a slightly lower cost, or you can get a higher bonus for a bigger cost.

The cost for Trade Routes was three for each additional route. I always thought that was too expensive for several reasons. For one, Trade Routes are hardcapped at 12, which is easily reached. Secondly, they didn't bring in that much money, if certain events and a certain UP issue don't happen. That is somewhat alleviated by my increase to the Trade bonus, but only to a certain degree. Then there is the problem that, if you are Evil and a certain UP issue gets passed, you could loose a lot of those Trade Routes. Not to mention, that those Trade Routes will disband, if one of your trading partners decides to declare war.

For those reasons, I decided to reduce the cost to one per route. It's a bit on the low side, but it provides a lot of new choices, when combined with the other abilities.

Well, I hope you like my changes.

Ok I will update the mod the Hylian race I found in the library under the list of mods. The stardock library. In the description they r from the Legend of Zelda from the Nintendo They replace the Drath race. They have an elven picture of the princess and their own logo with a specialised tech tree, The most I was able to get was a Drath with the Hylain race picture and logo. or a small race that was the Hylian race with either the logo as the picture or no picture. I also noticed that the minus was hard so see but was there

I just need tp ask the creativity works for Autum Twilight right

I had a look at it. The maker of that mod uses a edited RaceConfig.xml, which means, that it isn't compatible with my mod. You would need to create a custom .raceconfigxml for this to work.

Just click on the custom race option in the game. Save the race as it is. Then close the game. Open the .raceconfigxml for that race, replace all the information with that of the Hylian race from the RaceConfig.xml, and save. After that is done, you can also rename the .raceconfigxml file, to make it clear what race it is, but it isn't necessary to make it work. In the game, select the custom race option again, click on Load, and select your new race to play it.

I can't read the Race config file for the Hylian race why it seems to be written in some form of ascii

U should probably know with your mod if u minus some of your abilities to make other abilities better and then undo your minuses the game allows this gives u a negative 33 but lets u do that wont stop u from cheating

XML-files can be opened with any text editor.

The game flags the race as being illegal, but that only matters for the Metaverse, where you can't use mods anyhow. In any case, there is nothing I can do to prevent this.

Also, it's a singleplayer game. If people want to cheat, because they think it is fun and that is how they want to play, then who am I to argue with that? It doesn't affect anyone else, how those people play their game. Well, as long as they don't brag how easy the game is afterwards. <_<

Hi everybody! Version 1.02 is out.

There are only a few changes:

Diplomacy got a slight buff. I increased the bonuses to 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, and increased the Cost for Expert Diplomats from 5 to 6. The penalties has been changed accordingly.

The Thalan and Krynn start out with Stellar Cartography (AT only).

I fixed the bug that grants the Persistent Trade Routes ability to all races. This was done by adding all the missing racial ability entries to the RaceConfig.xml (AT and TotA).

I hope you enjoy it!

Hi everybody! I released version 1.03.

It only contains a few tweaks to the Dark Yor and Snathi for my other mod. So, if you don't play Autumn Twilight, you don't need to download this version.

Have fun!

Hi everybody! Version 1.1 is now available.

Here is what's new:

- Creativity no longer has a negative option. While searching for something else, I came across this: "+ FIXED: Creativity now ignores negative creativity ability values". I other words, the negative option was a free bonus point, because it didn't have any drawbacks.

- A new "Impossible" setting. This one provides zero customisation points. You therefore have to take penalties to some abilities in order to get bonuses to others.

- Some changes to the races in Autumn Twilight: the Korx start out with Stellar Cartography again, the Yor have a -10% penalty to Population Growth, and the penalty to Population Growth of the Thalan is now -40% instead of -30%.

As for Autumn Twilight itself, v1.12 is going along nicely. However, it's still going to be a while before I release it, because I want to make absolutely sure, that there are no remaining issues.

Hi everybody! Version 1.11 is out.

Here is what's new:

- Custom races now have different customisation points, like the other races (15, 13, 10, 5). For some reason, I forgot them when I made the adjustments.

- Adjusted the cost of the Weapons bonuses (Master costs 3 pts. now, instead of 4, and True Warrior costs 5 pts., instead of 6)

- Several abilities have now one more penalty option (Population Growth, Social Production, Military Production, Research, Influence, and Diplomacy)

- updated the RaceConfig.xmls for Autumn Twilight (Korx: reduced Economics from +15% to +10%, changed Trade from +25% back to +50%; changed the starting techs of the Snathi; some cosmetic changes to the DL and Pirates)

- added a Readme-file

Have fun!

Thanks for notifying me. I seem to have only updated the link at the top of the post, but not the one within the text. It's fixed now.
