Start8 1.17 beta for Windows 8.1 Preview available

We have a new beta for Start8 (v1.17) which includes various updates including fixes for some issues with the Windows 8.1 Preview.

Changelog

  • -Updated for Windows 8.1 Preview build compatibility
  • -Start8 allows customizing the Start button image AND provides a desktop Start menu
  • -Added new prompt on first run to select a default button image. Upgrade installs will not see this prompt.
  • -When running on Windows 8.1 Preview, respect the OS configuration for "boot to desktop"
  • -When used with Stardock WindowBlinds, you can also override the Start button in use with the WB setting for "always use the OS" button
  • -Options for showing the Windows 8.1 Start screen in other than full-screen mode are disabled in this version of Start8

Hi Neil,

 

Have you been able to isolate the problem with those two skins I linked to? I had hoped updating to the new Windowblinds beta would resolve this problem, but unfortunately it hasn't.

Something I noticed only yesterday is that sometimes if one of those two aero skins is run first, other skins will display similar problems until a system restart. I assume reloading start8 would do the trick, too, but the problem does not always occur, so that I cannot currently try out other possible solutions.

Received an email today saying that Start 8 is compatible with Windows 8.1 and to download from a link. But the link takes we to version 1.16 which I thought wasn't compatible. And the beta is 1.17 that I'm currently using. So is there a version available outside of the beta that is compatible? If so where can I download it from?

Here is the text of the email sent by Stardock:

Stardock   Software updated for Windows® 8.1
Start8, Fences, Decor8, ModernMix and WindowBlinds have all been updated to support the Windows 8.1 update. The updates can be downloaded via the store accounts page or Stardock Central (if Show betas is enabled) for registered users.

The mail is talking about the beta.  The store should have a beta link as well.

The release versions will be soon and Start8 is actually getting a second beta update today.

That is fine, it just should be more clear and the link takes you to version 1.16 which has issues with Windows 8.1 from what I've been told. Looking forward to Beta 2.

So was the second beta ever release for Start 8? I didn't see a notice saying it was out and where to download.
