[eMOD] Improved Catapults [0.90 for LH 1.5]


Good Morning!

I am proud to present, with some help from Parrotmath, my Improved Catapults mod! In short, catapults just were not accessable early enough in the game and I thought to design a lesser catapult version that can be played with throughout. The original catapult has also been upgraded into the greater catapult, providing a few new surprises to keep it interesting to play with. Note that the Watchtower has also been revamped in order to accomodate the new designs. See changelog for details.

Install Instructions

1) Download here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1mjvyuqzawcjczi/Improved%20Catapults%20%5B0.90%20released%20for%20LH%201.5%5D.zip

2) Unzip the file into your \My Documents\My Games\LegendaryHeroes\Mods directory

3) Ensure that your 'Use Mods' is checked on in your Legendary Heroes Options Menu

4) Start a new game for the changes to take effect.

5) Enjoy!

 

Compatability

I play with a large slew of mods, especially Parrotmath's mods, and have never experienced a problem with compatability yet. Most can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/d7k7l5aw0iapr8k/Mods%20Used.jpg However, I have never played with Heavenfalls Stormworld mod or other heavily changed mods and so I cannot speak to their compatability in that regard.

Possible Concerns & Future Considerations

- Working to add a Sticky Mud attack to the Greater Catpult that will slow movements from targets hit in a 3x3 area.

  • - Added the Lesser Catapult available for construction from the Drills tech.
  • - Added the Lesser Splash Ability, the Lesser Catapult dealing its basic attack in a 3x3 area with a 5 turn Cooldown
  • - Added the Greater Splash Ability, the Greater Catapult dealing its basic attack in a 5x5 area with 5 turn cooldown.
  • - Added the Hot Coals Ability for the Greater Catapult dealing a flame attack (better with more fireshards) in 3x3 area with 5 turn cooldown.
  • - Added the Lesser Catapult for city defense to the Barracks Improvement.
  • - Added the Lesser Catapult for city defense to the Command Post Improvement.
  • - Added the Greater Catapult for city defense to the Warrior Temple Improvement.
  • - Removed the Catapult for city defense from the Watchtower Improvement.
  • - Added two Archer Units for city defense to the Watchtower Improvement.
  • - Added +1 ZoC to the Watchtower Improvement

[0.80] Release for LH 1.2

  • - Changed Hot Coals graphics and sfx to be more in line with a Fireball effect.
  • - Fixed an error with the Watchtower pulling in the wrong data. (thanks Parrotmath)

[0.85] Release for LH 1.3

  • - Fixed missing description on the Warrior Temple
  • - Added Greater Catapult to War College as well as factions receive either Warrior Temple OR War College.

[0.90] Release for LH 1.5

  • - Added the Greater Catapult instead of just changing the base game Catapult
  • - Added a base ranged attack for the Greater Catapult
  • - Improved the Catapult descriptions in various places
  • - Added a Resist Damage to the Hot Coals ability
  • - Added the Inanimate weakness to both the Lesser Catapult and the Greater Catapult
  • - Improved the unit description icons
  • - Increased the cooldown of all abilities from 5 turns to 6 turns.

I am still playing with this, but: 

I like the lesser catapult, its cost and usefulness. However, it seems too early in the tech tree to me. Can it be bumped up to blacksmithing?

It can be bumped to where ever in needs to go. ;)

I had begun this mod with the premise that the catapult unit and it's graphic/sfx/etc were not being utilized early enough in the game. If, now they are showing up too early, then that can easily be adjusted.

I would like to throw out the question: Why do you think they are being released 'too early'?

Is the power level of the Lesser Catapult too strong?

Is the cost associated with the Lesser Catapult too steep for that early in the game?

Is it just a feeling that catapults shouldn't be associated with 'Drills' and that it's more of a 'Blacksmithing' tech?

I'd also have to consider how it would relate to the Greater Catapult and when that particular unit becomes available. I wouldn't want to have the Lesser Catapult 'skipped' over just to rush to the Greater Catapult. That defeats the purpose of having it.

I also don't want the Lesser Catapult to be overlooked compared to other units/creatures you can build around mid-game. It needs to be balanced in power level.

You're opinion on the matter is valuable.

The catapult is distinct from archers, and that's good. Archers are cheaper, but the lesser catapult's splash damage ability can be huge.

What if it was unlocked by 'Education' in the civics tree instead of in the warfare tree at all?

Would like to have the Lesser Catapult and Greater Catapult in the same tree and in the same building chain so that the Greater Catapult can replace the Lesser catapult for city defenders...

Good Morning

I'm about to go knee deep in sprucing up this mod for LH 1.5.

 

For those of you who have played with this mod; is there any feedback that you can give?

Is the mod worth playing with?

Is there gaps in the mod or does it appear to be working as intended?

Is there anything that should be added?

Is there anything that should be removed?

How is the balance of the mod?

Are regular catapult (ie. Catapults as opposed to Lesser or Greater Catapults) meant to have a melee attack?  I tried your mod a while back and regular Catapults were attacking in melee, I'm not sure if this bug is still there or if even regular Catapults are still in the game when your mod is running.

Regular catapults have been augmented into the Greater Catapults.

 

I'll check out that melee attack...

It may have been a while back, I'm not sure if I had this issue when I last played this mod.

I did notice that the tech Siege Weapons offers the 'Catapult' as the unit. This should be the 'Greater Catapult'. I'm working towards the tech now in a game and will check to see if it's just a nomenclature thing or if it's routing to the wrong unit.

I just downloaded the 1.5 zip from the dropbox link above, and am unable to open or extract the folder.  Tried downloading twice just to make sure...

Edit: Found a workaround, was able to open/download a 'working' file, and copy it from my temp folder.  Most of the other zips I downloaded today worked fine, but there were a handful of others that had this issue.  Zip file weirdness, gotta luv it!
