Advent Voices

Hello everyone,

I am new to creating mods and would like to apologize for my lack of knowledge in it.

What I want to do is change the sound files of the advent since, to me, they sound annoying to the point that i wont play them. I am trying to find sounds that i can replace the advent's voices with and so far i have only found that the Dawn of War 2's Eldar Farseer, Autarch, and howling Banshees to be an excellent replacement for them but I need a little more to pool from. I would like to use some protoss voices and maybe zerg kerrigan if possible. for the advent's titans i am going to use the wraithlord's and wraithguard's voices (seems fitting to me).

Also, I couldn't find a post about modding rules and if using copyright material is against the forum's rules. Please let me know politely if this is so.

So, are you asking how to do this or just announcing that you are going to do it?

There are no special modding rules. Though I would remove any explicit references of things you want to use from your main topic, let the details get buried in posts. Don't ask don't tell is always the best policy for such things on the internet.

I read the tutorial for making a proper mod folder and have no issues with that. My problem is that I need to convert fsb files to ogg file format and I can't find a converter for it. I need a bit of help finding a converter. Would it better just to record the sounds directly? If so is there a program for it?

Not only am I looking for advice on the file extension predicament, I would like some suggestions on other voices i can draw from.

Thank you for your patience

Use aluigi's fsb extractor or towav for fsb files. Music Player Ex, a java program, also can handle those particular files.

I would personally just re-voice everything myself although I can't handle female voices unless they are very heavily edited for obvious reasons. Advent voice edits are literally like a 5 click job, though.

Haha, I was just thinking about this the other day.  Not how to make a mod, but how I would try playing Advent more if I could handle listening to their angry inhaled helium girl scout voices for hours.

Question for you modding experts,

If I used alternate sound files for Advent, would I be able to play multiplayer games with them assuming nothing else was changed, or would the different sound files create a checksum problem that prevented me from playing with others who didn't use the same files?

Thx in advance if you know the answer....

As long as you just do a simple replacement (I.e. only put .ogg files with the same name as the originals in your mod's sound folder), it will not effect the checksum and you can use it online. It is basically the exact same thing as making a music replacement mod, which as you can see here works just fine in MP.

And for all you Advent haters out there, you clearly need some stronger drugs or better cybernetic injectors.  ;)

Thx Goafan, I will have to take a look at that ....  anyone have an Advent sound conversion?  =)

Towav doesn't recognize the file format and musicplayerex wont even start.

Made a simple mod this morning where I replaced the Advent voice files with Vasari voice files.  Had to make a couple judgement calls where ships were the same, but fast and dirty, it works.  Played a couple test games including one online.  Works great.  Haven't tested all the situations explicitly -- replaced 367 files -- but haven't had a problem yet.

Thanks for the pointer GoaFan!

I have just made a voice mod for Advent to make them less girlish.  (I am surprised you think Vasari voices are more tolerable! )

Vasari voices are no big deal...it is mostly low pitches and growls.  Some of the Advent voices are so shrill I become instantly annoyed.

The Vasari voices are infinitely more annoying than the Advent.
