Same here.  Black screen with any selection.

I looked at the "?" on the About info and I saw this:

My PC has an NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M Graphics with 1GB Ram.    I know the cheaper version of my PC have the intel built in graphics, so I assume mine does as well, but it shoul dbe disabled....right?

I'll run the same file as s_Galland and see what you guys see...

I tried to change my graphics driver to the NVIDIA card , but still nothing.

I am also experiencing this. Do you want me to also run that utility?

The fix for me was to install the latest version of DirectX 9. I am even running Windows 8, but apparently the DX9 update is required.

The DirectX 9 files are supplementary to the version of DirectX that is included with Windows, so it would need to be installed. Typically the DeskScapes installer does this, but for anyone having this issue, try installing from here: http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

I did as suggested and got my deskscapes working, kinda, whenever I apply them the end up in a box. I tried al the different settings, stretch, fit, all of them. Here is a screen shot. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7337/8716755571_3fa386f25c_h.jpg

That looks like it could be a DPI issue. We have seen in the past where if your system DPI is set to higher than 125%, that will happen on video based dreams.

It is on a Surface Pro, so the DPI would be standard across all surface pro's. If I remember correctly they tweaked the config on Win8 for the Surface Pro's to make stuff more visible on the smaller screen.

My issue sort of fixed itself.  I simply rebooted, and all is well.

Unfortunatly many of the dream files I like are not in the right format for Windows 8.....something about not having the proper codec for DVD playback. 

broderp, I solved that problem by googling, and downloading a codec pack!

I just downloaded DesktopScapes yesterday and this is exactly what happen to me.  Black screen and than I checked under the ? mark and see exactly this message. How to fix this.  I try to apply a new background and nothing happens at all.

i have found a solution

go to 

C:\program files\stardock\deskscape\

there are 3 main file 

deskscape.exe

deskscape64.exe

deskscapeconfig.exe

go to there properties --> compatibility and select "compatibility mode for windows 8" and tick on "run as administrator" and apply settings 

then run deskscapeconfig.exe

prob solved
