Civ V - Brave New World Announced!

Coming September 2013.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/03/15/civilization-v-brave-new-world-announced-expands-culture-and-diplomacy/

Key Features

* New Culture Mechanics including Great Writers and Great Musicians who create masterpieces to spread culture to distant civs (supposedly you can create the Mona Lisa or things of that nature.) New Culture Victory condition.

* New Diplomacy Mechanics including a World Congress which unlocks with the first civ that discovers all civs on the map.  The World Congress meets to pass resolutions that affect many aspects of the game.  Also, the diplomacy AI has supposedly received an overhaul.

* New Trade Mechanics including international trade routes which are set up through caravans or cargo ships, give gold and research bonuses, and allow easier spread of religion and culture.  You will also be able to share food and production between cities internally.

* 9 New Civs.  Poland is the only confirmed new civ.  Assyria is likely due to the siege tower in the above screenshot.  Portugal is a strong contender, especially with the new trade emphasis, and Zulu and/or Kongo are likely due to the new Africa scenario.

* 2 New Scenarios - American Civil War and Colonialism in Africa

* 8 New Wonders and new industrial age ideologies - could that mean corporations?

Mods in multiplayer is all I need. Civup and Gem will be complete!  }:)

I really haven't used any mods in Civ 5 yet, I really like the base game as is.

Haven't really played any MP either because I don't know anyone else that plays, and trying to join public games is a pain in the ass.

I'm not that excited for this, G&K is still more than holding my interest, and the proposed new mechanics don't really sound all that necessary to me, but I guess we'll just see how they work.

I'm just hopeful that they get some better naval AI, cuz... it's just like shooting fish in a barrel to defend against it at the moment.  On the other hand, I kind of stopped playing maps where the AI even needs to use ships so that helps :D

They need to improve the AI.

Also, you can really see how Stardock's threaded coding helps a game run better.  FE can run smoothly on my old laptop, Civ V really churns.

Too late for them to put that in though.

Maybe, but the AI is light years ahead of the Elemental franchise at this point.  I only mention that because the original games (Civ 5 and WoM) released within a couple weeks of each other.

Guys seriously. You want Civ 5 to be near as good as Civ 4 try CivUp and GEM. (by summer it will be)

New Leader Changes (most are in)- http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=487154

I also use Infoaddict, One color Civs, and Colored Religions.

I'll never play base Civ 5 again. Modders have access to AI and most of the stuff so every month this mod gets updated. (Thal is on a 2 week break at the moment ie family man and work.)

Are you the author of said mods?  I always enjoy chatting with the creators :)

Can you give some details about what the mods strive to do?  I only started playing CiV recently so I don't necessarilly feel as though I need any mods to 'improve' my experience, I'm still enjoying figuring out how everything works, and what strategies appeal to me.

Me lol no. Thal is head for the 2 (Vanilla one is only for base Civ 5) mods. Though hes get alot of help and people donate their mods to him too.

I'm just a beta tester and given my feedback.

The list is way to huge to list off. I'll go dig up the lists on the wiki. Note there still tons more not being listed. Like jungle tiles in most cases are useless and not upgradeable ie only cut them down. Its no longer the case and it doesn't take forever upgrade them.

Goals- http://communitas.wikia.com/wiki/Goals

CivUp- http://communitas.wikia.com/wiki/Civup G&K only

Gem- http://communitas.wikia.com/wiki/Gem G&K only

Vanilla or Vem- http://communitas.wikia.com/wiki/Vem  note this is only for base Civ 5 NOT G&K (if you have G&K Vem's features are in CivUp)

Also if some part of these mods you don't like you can jump in the code and turn them off. I use it all.

Word of warning drop the difficulty down 1-3 levels. This ai cheats way less and performs better. Note sometime in the summer the tactical ai will be getting a overhaul since now they have 90-95% access to the code.

Gotta disagree, esp when you take cheating into account.

Ok ya I'm going off topic. Hopefully the modders get the rest of the code unlocked. Also Canada better be in the game.

I'm sure we will get more info when Pax starts up.

Alstein- I agree with ya, base AI in Civ 5 (G&K) aint light years ahead of Elemental. Hell it cant even buy buildings still.

Hi lad. Join the steam chat room of the group NO QUITTERS. There you ask for them to invite you to group. Just remember the golden rule in the community; never quit a game.

If they allow you to actually see the thinking, the pluses and minuses, behind the AI's dealings with you, as it was in Civ IV, I'll seriously consider buying the game and its expansions. But the removal of that and religion really knocked it out of the running, for me. And now it has religion back, so only this is missing.

I would like legitimate Alliances back, rather than simply the pathetic defense pact for 20 turns... Im mean serious I have been buddy buddy like with some nations for the whole game and I can't enter into a semi permanent alliance?

You can see this in Gods & Kings. It doesn't show you actual values, but you can pretty much tell by the intensity of the colors. And the factors affecting the AI's disposition actually make sense too. Also, certain leaders are assholes, period. It's a solid game as it is now, and I find it quite challenging, but I've only played 60 hours or so. I'm looking forward to the new expansion.

Whats the diplo AI thinking- infoaddict.

Want deals, open borders, alliances, etc... like Civ 4 (CivUp and Gem but more so CivUp has that covered). Maybe I forgot to mention random events.

Also lots of changes from this mod do making into the base game.

With respect, that's nowhere near the same thing. One of the features I thought was brilliant in Civ IV was the way the "thinking" of an AI opponent's rules set was broken down for me, so I could pinpoint a problem I could fix, or a potential issue in the future. It gave me a better insight into their actions by showing their motivations, much as I would be able to tell if I were sitting across from another human player.

If you watch the Pax video starts right after 6hr mark- http://www.twitch.tv/2k/b/381300309

This is all we got. I'll check youtube for more. Looks good so far. (Hopefully the last of the hardcoded stuff is gone and this game is 99% open for modders)

Ok I'll keep this simple, Civfanatics keep updating this post for what we know so go here from time to time and it will be updated- http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=490854

Theres been a big info dump yesterday and today. Enjoy-

- Hotels and airports are in and have a tourism bonus.
- Christianity has been split into Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodoxy.
- France and some other old civs would have changes to their UAs.
- There will be 1 new resource, but it wont be revealed because it's linked to a new unannounced civ
- Diplomat unit that works similar to spy, but for diplomacy rather than espionage
- Multiplayer: Observer Mode
- Multiplayer: Sequential Turn Mode, Hybrid (standard simultaneous multi outside of combat, sequential inside combat)
- Multiplayer: Pitboss added
- All of the above additions are coming to ALL editions of the game, not just Brave New World
- Piety has new finishers in the shape of Reformation Beliefs, you can pick one if you finish the tree
- Diplomats give indicators of how civs are likely to vote in World Congress sessions
- Diplomats control the selling and buying of World Congress votes
- Happiness system remains mostly unchanged from Gods and Kings (balance work ongoing, obviously)
- City flopping is back due to tourism, but it can be avoided by changing ideologies towards the ones shared by the tourism-producing civ
- Scramble for Africa maintains the continent's outer shoreline, but the interior is heavily randomized
- Great Musician can go on a Concert Tour through other civs and create a large chunk of tourism
- Great Writer can create a Political Treatise, which grants a large chunk of culture
- France's new UA is "City of Light": Theme bonuses doubled in capital city (not sure if bonuses are vanilla Civ V or entirely new)
- New Tech in the shape of Internet (culture-flavoured)
- 30-40 Great Artist works, mentioned Great Musicians and Writers but not quantities of their works in the game
- More fine-tuning of AI civs (less backstabbery by genuine good friends, etc)
- Fall Balance Patch planned for the end of this year
- New natural wonders
- Portugal will be present. It will have a UI that allows them to catch CS's resources (feitoria?) and its UU, the Nao, will be able to "trade riches" (special kind of commerce action)
- The Zulu is in

Still crossing my fingers for mods and multi at some point. This expansion is looking good. Well of souls should be updated sometime today.

Not sure how this will work. Will it help vs. doubble movement exploits?

Just checked it out and I gotta tell ya. There's a possible pitfall with the new archaeology mechanic.  Why?  Because it offers extraordinary rewards for bad behavior, as in the kind that wrecks 4x over the long run into the endgame.

Every 4x game generally has factions starting small, growing up, then flexing muscles on the nearest little guy within arms reach.  After eliminating the first meal, the local bully's eyes are set searching for the next little guy to pick on and eventually devour. Finally endgame comes and by now the majority of players have been removed leaving only the largest empires standing that take forever to finish off, a terribly long slow boring grind.  So optimal 4x strategy usually becomes a game of avoiding risk rather than reaping great benefits for taking risks.

So how does any of this tie into archaeology mechanics?  Archaeological war sites get spawned by both unmemorable wars from weaker factions at equal value to strong ones boasting very memorable wars.  So it's in your best interest to pick fights and score with more puny factions versus taking down stronger ones.  Hell even fights with barbarians get spawns.  Ultimately this leads to the endgame scenario listed above, late game tedium.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Mods in multiplayer is finally up! Mac patch is in testing and I am sure you will get that soon.
