Hey, I don't know about you guys but Homeworld was one of the games that brought me to Sins and after 14 years odd is still one of the best games I've played, ever. There's a kickstarter project from a developer trying to seek the rights that looks like it might actually be capable of making a credible game.. Here's the link

Nothing about that is in any way going to inspire me to support the kickstarter. Summed up:

1) The devs have no experience building games outside of flash/facebook/mobile apps.

2) The license is going to cost a hell of a lot more than 50k - the 50k are costs for just entering the negotiations

3) They are looking for our money to help them buy licenses so they can then sell the games to us

4) Their goal is actually to turn homeworld 2, one of the greatest games of all times, into a touchscreen monstrosity.

5) Having completed that abomination, their goal is literally then "Using the engine and our framework from Homeworld Touch, we would immediately follow-up with a much deeper and expansive production for Homeworld 3."

6) The kickstarter includes a money-back guarantee if they fail to acquire the license. You'll never get all the money back from a successful kickstarter because they nip 10%. Even after that, a guarantee from a complete stranger is no guarantee at all.

You'd have to be bat shit insane to support this Kickstarter.

I agree. Do you think it's a scam or they're just delusional?

BOTH.

Unless they have some kind of product to show us, Even a pre-alpha. DO NOT give them anything.

I wouldn't touch anything unless it involved someone from the original Homeworld dev team. The fact that these fools have no game making experience at all, and are fishing for money to buy the licence, and fund a non existent project is a major red flag. I wouldnt trust it.

BTW the link to the kickstarter page doesnt work.

Ah sorry about the link, here it is again this works for me anyway; http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/teampix/homeworld-touch-ios-android-and-homeworld-3-pc-mac?ref=category

^^ still not working, works if you copy and paste.

I appreciate some of the points you've made, it's definitely a risk funding a stranger but I would add, it's not going to be some sh*tty facebook social game as the trend seems to be now days, in-case anyone wasn't clear. Fair enough they make flash stuff predominantly, isn't that where the talent is getting sucked into now?.. But seem to be genuine fans wanting to work with modding fans on a real game.

As far as I can see, they're combining the funds from other sources with their own, this is to get the go ahead for the project and some of the cost based on the interest of the community.

Not really sure what they mean by using the same framework but it will be on PC and Mac, both Cataclysm and HW2 didn't differ that much from the first, I'd happily pay for something along the same mould, but that is your choice.

You also get perks for donating so for donating roughly around the cost of a new game you will get it for free along with extras relative to the amount. They also promise to cover admin and legal fees if they don't get the rights so presumably you would get your full donation back.

Like I say, it's up to you if you want to donate or not at the end of the day, i'm not saying by no means there aren't any risks involved in donating.

I'd also like to add, im not associated with the company, just a fan of the series.

While it may not be a shitty facebook game.

The $50,000 goal and $100,000 strech goal isn't going to come close to being able to purchase the IP. If they are collaborating then I really would like to know who they are.

Again they have no experience when it comes to game development on a PC and they're trying for the multiple devices like the Oyua which isn't even out.

The goals are far too unrealistic. I am a fan of the series myself but I wouldn't touch this with a meter long stick. My opinion still stands that Stardock or some developer that actually has experience in the field take up on the IP.

Kickstarter is a good way for the unknown small team developers to get noticed and running but that doesn't mean the developers should try for something they are clearly arn't capable of completing.

TL'DR: Don't donate to this, they arn't capable of producing all of this.

The issues i have still stand. I used to be a part of the HW modding community, I don't think a new HW made by "Modders" without any input at all from the original developers will touch on what made the original HW great, and "IF" they pull this off It will be nothing more than a mediocre "Fan Wank".

The only thing to look forward to is an HD remake of the original game. Again they have ZERO PC game experience, and no tech demo of this new engine which they plan on using.

The biggest issue is that they do not own the IP. Yet they are moving forward like they own the HW IP already. It is almost as if a bunch of ambitious "kids" decided to start a kickstarter thing for HW, but have no clue what it takes to make the game.

Much like how some modders propose a new mod, but have absolutely NOTHING to show, but an idea, and expect the rest of the community to make this mod for them. The difference is they are asking for money.
