Shroud of The Avatar

Richard Garriott announced his new game yesterday. Shroud of The Avatar, I like what I see, single player with multiplayer, but not a MMO. This is the first Kickstarter game I have ever supported and really only because I loved the old Ultima(s), Ultima 4 being my favorite. I hope he applies his Ultima magic to this game and it doesn't turn out to be crap like some of those more recent games he has worked on.

I have a boxed copy of all the Ultima's and was excited about the new game at first.  After further reading, I found out it will be full of micro-transactions and that it's only the first of 5 chapters and all the crap companies like EA put in games to milk you for more money.  I wanted a single-player game and this is supposedly a mix of single-player and multi-player and I expect the multi-player to get the most focus because that is where they'll make their money on micro-transactions.

Where did you read that from? I have yet to see anything about micro-transactions. During the live video chat today they only mentioned the 5 chapters i.e. expansions. I tried to ask about DLC, but the chat was scrolling too fast. I'm good with DLC. I don't think they'll skimp on the single player, but I do expect they will fully develop the multiplay. At least it's not another MMO. :)

The micro-transactions were mentioned in the comments section of the Kickstarter.

What's so special with this game compared to Skyrim, Torchlight II and others where you run around in a big world?

When I saw Kickstarter video I was so not impressed. I've backed Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Project Eternity and new Torment, but I think I'll pass on this one.

For me it's because the game is more or less a new Ultima game. I played Utlima 2 back in 1982 and 4,5,6 as they were released, 7, 8, 9, and UO years after release. At the time they were the best rpg I had ever played. I am hoping to recapture that feeling with this game. That said Skyrim kicks ass and I play the crap out of it. :)

Today they comfirmed single player requires no onlinen connection, no micro-transactions for single player (will be a game shop for online), and no DRM for kickstarter supporters. Main quests will be nearly the same for both online and single player.

@Gandhialf I should have jumped on Wasteland 2, hell I played the first one back in the day. I think I will for Torment, Planscape is a great game.
