First truly bionic eye has arrived

This is amazing.

Many illnesses can damage the eye, from the cornea to the retina, the layer of the eye which translates and communicates the image to the brain for interpretation.

Now there’s a device which ameliorates retinal diseases to a great extent. It won’t help degenerative nerve diseases, though as it needs intact Optic nerves to convey translated impulses to the brain’s optic cortex.

Of course as the device becomes more and more sophisticated, it will become farther and farther beyond financial reality for most… despite the fact that the cause of most adult blindness is diabetes, which is far from a rare disorder.

Yes, this is awesome news.  I haven't checked all your links yet. I read somewhere, recently, that attaching these types of devices into portions of the brain that don't usually handle vision functions also works.  Seems the brain will rewire, (plasticity?) handle it.  Is good news for people with some brain damage.  Whats next?

At first, certainly, but as technology improves the price will start dropping as has happened with computers and every other high-tech consumer gizmo.  I just hope there's a lot of companies involved in the cybereye business so we can get healthy competition going.

My vision is augmented... sorry I couldn't help myself. Good news though. Crazy times we live in and it gets crazier with more medical innovations that come to pass.
