Dark Wizard attack was 850?
I don't think this is right. The Dark Wizard cast a spell that wiped out my whole army. Now that is what I call OP.

The spell is despair, which you can get yourself via a scroll. It transfers double the caster's level in HP from each unit, halved if they resist. Armies are fodder for the Dark Wizard.
Fight the Dark Wizard with one tough champion who can survive one hit from despair. Get in melee range, he's a teddy bear. Or kill him with a strategic spell, vetrar's howl/tidal wave/falling star etc.
Or combo of both.
This.
Alternatively, you can wipe him out fairly easily with a couple high-ish level cavalry (5's are a treat) with a decent weapon and the charge trait. In that instance, it's basically an initiative roll. He pretty much is wearing nothing but underwear (no armor to speak of) and has the hitpoints of a carrot. But again, unless you've got lots of init, don't even mess with him.
Piglet's ideas are sound.
One more alternative: one high level caster with strong spell damage bonuses could likely kill the dark wizard with a single flame dart - but he'd have to do enough damage to one-hit the dark wizard, or despair would follow.
What I generally do is to go with an army with a mage champ. I equip the mage with daggers and the such as to have good init and just keep countering his despair. Of course, if the dark wizard resists the counterspell... You're dead.
However, I sometimes use a bug (when I don't feel like reloading lol) where if you click auto-resolve (after failing the counterspell, for instance), you win without any loses... Seems that because the attack of the dark wizard is not so terribly good.
Fuck Dark Wizards.
Impulsive archers do the job too
and from my exp they always do. feedback on the other hand works all the time for me.
but impulsive mages or archers are a great idea. never thought of that...
