Is it possible to access the shipyard and creat new ship styles outside of the game? My problem is that it seems like you can only do it in-game, and access to different Hull types is dependent on researched technologies. I find this needlessly time consuming.

Ship styles are made up from template ships. Yes, you can create and alter them outside the game like any data file, but changes will only take effect when you start a new game.
You can make new ship templates in the ship designer in-game, it will allow you access to all hull sizes.
When you have enough sjip templates to create your ship style, select your race as an opponent during game setup, and customise them. You should see a button to customise/create your ship style (it's always based on one of the existing styles). You should go into that and at the very least save as a new style.
You can either use the in-game chooser to pick your designed templates (remember to save/apply) or exit the game and customise the file by hand.
With the in-game ship-designer, it seemed to me that I could have access to a different hull size to customize, only after having researched the propoer technology during an ongoing game.
Maybe I remember it wrong. I played that game so many years ago, and I'm looking to buy it again in the enxt couple of days. I'll look it up, thanks!
Hi. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding you, but it sounds like you might be unaware that the latest expansion (Twilight of the Arnor) introduced a ship designer that's independent of the actual game. If you haven't played in a while, you might have missed it. Anyway, there's a "Ship Designer" button on the start up screen in between "Tournaments" and "High Scores". It's just like the shipyard ingame, but you have access to all hulls, weapons, engines, etc. I think you have to have TA, but if you buy the Ultimate Edition then you'll have it.
