Basic farms available at start of new game?

I played Gal Civ 1 along time ago.

 

I just picked up Gal Civ 2-Ultimate Edition and D/L the most recent patch update..2.04 etc.

 

When I start my first turn, I want to construct a farm on a tile set...that option is not available.

 

What is available are factories, research labs and entertainment centers...but no farms.

 

Do I have to research a tech first to make that construction option available?

Yes, most races don't have a farm improvement at the start of the game and need to research it first. The only exceptions are the Iconians, Torians and Yor.
