So the computer finally is showing it's age

It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

Ignore all those other green sucker trap buttons. I downloaded and scanned them all with Malwarebytes and ASC Pro with AV, they came up clean. They appear to be  only XP drivers so they may not work on Win7. You could try compatibility mode though. It may be time for a newer soundcard as I could find no Windows7 drivers at all for it.

Funny thing is that soundcard is new. Just bought it new off of eBay. I think I have already tried those drivers, no go.

New to you and unused perhaps, but the drivers for it have been around since.....

December 15th, 2003 and that is just the last updated version date.

So before Windows 7 came out?
Way, way before,  even before Vista came out.

Perhaps a reason it was on ebay ....;)

It's often all about how persistent you are with your searching....can even take hours...but often there's a solution....somewhere...;)

Therein lies the difference between "new" and "recent".  X|

Computer is running great. And that's the issue. I love solving the issues when it acts up. Maybe I will re-install Windows 7.

What about the old XP setup. Did you put it back together with better parts?

If I remember correctly I did.

where are you with the sound?

Yeah,broken pc is fun, usually!

Well the sound is working for now. I still have that other sound card but it's useless under Windows 7, no drivers. The onboard sound port is still very loose.

My thoughts?  Didn't you just get a 'free' system from some very generous community members here?  So is there a real need for a notebook at this time?  If not, I'm sure some of the community members who went out of their way to ship you parts etc. might appreciate being paid back for shipping etc.......since it appears your economic situation must have since changed?

You asked.....those are my thoughts.   O:)

I don't miss the parts, (the cost of shipping is another matter) but....... if you can even think about buying a laptop............

You're a hell of a lot better off than I am.

He got a job.

I didn't send anything I'd really miss, and I don't need paying back.

But some of the guys who put themselves out to help might.

No worries, I think I will hold off on the notebook. Save some money, buy a few new parts for this system. More memory for example. As always, thanks for the feedback.

Unbelievable is my thought. I speak for me and me only, do what you want with your money.I am personally glad you have that luxury now and did not help with any strings attached.I do not help and then expext paid back. I was not forced to do anything, felt like a good thing and still does. I like to think that small small token of help set you on a better path in life. Go nuts, buy an Alienware Laptop!

Monk, why complain, what are you out?

Now, someone push my new skin through, taking forever, I am going nuts waiting. LOL.

Kona, I have to tell you to make you laugh. At work, someone threw away a HP pavilion DV5, I took it from the tash. Has a remote for dvd playing which had the laptop in hibernate. So a 2.8 gig cpu upgrade and 2gig of ram cost me 56.00, now I have a smokin laptop, imo, for 56.00, and it is the first I ever owned.  Hows that for a deal!

Sweet deal. Have fun with that laptop.

As I said before, I'm not going to get rid of this system. Just going to do some upgrades. :)
