So the computer finally is showing it's age

It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.

So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.

As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.

So carry on. Discuss I guess.

I new something would go wrong, and I new it would be ebay. I sent the seller an email, it will not help you now though. I am kinda shocked you do not have an extra or know someone. Any local shops around{computer} might give you one free. Otherwise you are in for a wait again.

 

I will let you know what the seller says.

Well, you're in luck then. I went to the PO and it was closed for lunch and came back home to wait til 1:30. I have a brand new VGA cable and I'll throw it in the package with the graphics card. :thumbsup:

Depends on how many monitors you have owned and/or mobo if it had on board video, and the maker. I have two older monitors that have VGA connections, but the cables do not detach like the newer ones do. I'm up to my ears with cables of all types so giving one up was no biggy. ;)

Good one Carguy1! Kona, they, being the computer shop that sells on ebay, said it was an oversite and they will send it out immediately. So , now you will have a spare next time it looks like. So close, hope the rest comes soon. Also, apologies to EBAY, I guess!

Welll......it seems you got Zubished DoorTech1. Perhaps an oversight on your part. Anyway...........FYI.......don't let the duck hear you say that. I hear he's got the latest version of DuckTape_Sticky. It comes with remote control access. It can zap right through your PC and then what ya gonna do huh all taped up and stuff.

On a side note......glad things are working out. Two more days to go. Talk about antsy. lol

Hang in there Uvah, besides, he has no monitor or cpu yet any way!.  Glad you are still hooking him up though, very nice of you. One can always use more operating systems. Especially if you game, that requires every os ever made sometimes!

I'd also send XP but I find I need it for my little Acer, that's where my book lives. Tried using the app for getting past the password I forgot...didn't work. I burned the ISO to a disc and loaded it in the DVD player but nothing happens. Probably did something wrong....knowing me. lol

Kona, you may already know this, but be sure to put some thermal paste on the cpu before installing it. On the flat smooth side, not the side with the pins....lol.

The fan won't have any on it, the heatsink/cooler might. If it is a used part, clean it off and put new paste on the CPU, not on the heatsink.

Yeah I meant the heatsink, not the fan. Both are brand new. The heatsink has thermal paste on it, covered by a removable thing slip of plastic.

If it's already coated...do NOT add more.

More paste does not improve conductivity - it'll actually be a negative...;)

Personally, I'd clean that off and apply Arctic Silver. If you have none then using what is there should be ok as long as there is some and it is enough to cover the CPU. Up to you on that one.

And, what they said,^^^^^ don't apply more on top of that.
