managing the huge tech tree

I've found in playing GC2 that managing the tech tree is a problem. One reason is it is soooo big that one can't see a major portion of it at one time without everything being too small to read. Another issue is the detailed info for each tech cannot be seen without selecting the tech and reading the info for only one tech at a time.

When I want to know about a tech that I haven't attained, I have to select it, losing my current place on the tech tree to go look.

In desperation, I used Excel to create a paper reproduction of the entire tree so that I have it by my keyboard as I play and can get my bearings within the entire structure.

Searching online, I've found various efforts to grab the monster - such as a pure text listing of all techs (unfortunately way out of date). The wiki for GC has a handy reference but it, too, is dated and lacks the latest techs (Interstellar Construction, for example).

I'd be interested to know what others have do to deal with this problem, maybe I am missing some method in the game.

The Galactopedia is the best help for this, in my opinion. It can show all the tech trees, improvements, ship and starbase modules, and more.

I tried downloading the Galactopedia, but it would not recognize my Steam-installed GC2. It tells me it cannot find necessary files.

Problem solved - see next post.

If other Steam users are reading who want Galactopedia to run - start Galactopedia up and when it asks for a manual path, give it this one...

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\MetaverseData

When I want to look at a tech's details, I right click the tech.  It shows me the details without changing my present tech selection.
